Greetings, Brooklyn. Today is the 245th day of the year.

ON THIS DAY IN 1895, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “Racing Yachts Side by Side, Defender and Valkyrie Lie Together in Erie Basin.”

The article focused on the excitement surrounding the upcoming first international yacht race.

“Every movement made by either of the yachts is watched with an interest so intense as to throw every other yachting event in the background,” the Eagle reported. “The American’s cup committee last evening posted the official programme for the coming [races] on the bulletin board of the New York Yacht Club.”

THE TITANIC WAS found on this day in 1985. Almost 75 years after the ship sank in the North Atlantic after striking an iceberg, a joint American-French expedition force led by marine geologist Dr. Robert Ballard located the wreck. The luxury liner was resting on the ocean floor 12,500 feet down — about 350 miles southeast of Newfoundland, Canada. In July 1986 Ballard returned in an expedition aboard the Atlantis II to explore the ship with underwater robots. Two memorial bronze plaques were left on the deck.

WORLD WAR II began on this day in 1939. After securing a nonaggression pact with the USSR, which secretly allowed for the partition of Poland by the Soviet Union and Germany, on Aug. 23, Germany invaded Poland without a declaration of war at 4:45 a.m. two days later. Britain and France declared war, with Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa soon following with their own declarations. Poland, overwhelmed by German air and land power, was in German and Soviet hands before the month concluded.
