Chief Judge Dora L. Irizarry has announced that a special session naturalization ceremony will take place Sept. 16 at the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York to celebrate Constitution Day.

District courthouses throughout the nation are commemorating Constitution Day by celebrating with a special naturalization ceremony. Constitution Day (or Citizenship Day) is a federal observance that recognizes the adoption of the U.S. Constitution and those who have become U.S. citizens.

Okieriete (Oak) Onaodowan, who plays James Madison and Hercules Mulligan in the award-winning hit Broadway musical “Hamilton,” will be the keynote speaker at the event. The son of Nigerian immigrants who grew up in West Orange, N.J., Onaodowan is an experienced stage actor who has performed on and off-Broadway, on television and in film.

“Hamilton” tells the story of the life of Alexander Hamilton, who was the only New York signer of the Constitution, earning him the title of an American “Founding Father.” With John Jay and James Madison, he was an author of “The Federalist” essays that were critical in achieving the ratification of the Constitution, which we celebrate today.

The event will showcase video presentations from President Barack Obama and Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor.

The Constitution Day special session naturalization ceremony will take place on Sept. 16 at 11 a.m. in the Ceremonial Courtroom at the Theodore Roosevelt United States Courthouse in Brooklyn.
