How nice would it be to wander through a Brooklyn subway station and have the opportunity to admire brand new artwork created by an artist? That is precisely what the MTA has planned.

The MTA Arts & Design division is looking for samples of artists’ previous work to review in consideration for the new Percent for Art project, which will be designed with durable materials such as glass or mosaic. The selected artists’ works will be created specifically for the train stations.

A panel comprised of arts and design professionals will select finalists to develop original art proposals. Finalists will be given site specifications and a detailed overview of the project, for which they will receive an honorarium of $1,000. Following the selection panel’s review of the proposals, one artist per station will be selected to receive the commission.

The budget for design and creation of the artwork for each subway station will range from approximately $200,000 to $230,000, including an artist fee of up to 20 percent of the final art project cost. As part of this fee, the selected artist will be required to submit a budget, produce completed designs and select someone to oversee the installation of the artwork. They must be able to work in NYC between 2016 and 2020.

The five N Line Brooklyn stations selected are:

  • Eighth Avenue station (Sunset Park)

  • 18th Avenue station (Bensonhurst)

  • 20th Avenue station (Bensonhurst)

  • Bay Parkway station (Bensonhurst)

  • 86th Street station (Gravesend)

Artists who have original creations for consideration may submit up to 20 images at mtaarts.submittable.com.

Submissions must be complete by midnight on Friday, Sept. 30. For more information regarding MTA Arts & Design, go to [email protected].
