Police are investigating an incident in which a man was struck by a northbound R train in a Bay Ridge subway station Wednesday afternoon.

It’s not clear if the man jumped, fell, or was pushed to the train tracks. The incident took place at the 86th Street station at Fourth Avenue at around 1:16 p.m., police confirmed.

The man was pinned beneath one of the subway cars after being struck.

An EMS crew transported the man to Lutheran Medical Center.

Service on the R train was disrupted in both the northbound and the southbound directions as police conducted an investigation of the scene, according to the MTA.

R train service was suspended between 95th Street in Bay Ridge and 36th Street in Sunset Park until 1:50 p.m., at which time the service was amended to a suspension of R trains between 95th Street and 59th Street in Sunset Park, an MTA spokesperson told the Brooklyn Eagle. During this time, some southbound R trains were operating on the N express line between 59th Street and Stillwell Avenue in Coney Island.

At 2:25 p.m., R train service resumed but trains bypassed the 86th Street station in both directions. Police concluded their onsite investigation and full train service resumed at 2:45 p.m., the MTA said.

Councilmember Vincent Gentile (D-Bay Ridge-Dyker Heights-Bensonhurst) wrote about the incident on his Facebook page.

Gentile expressed sympathy not only for the man who was struck by the train, but for the person driving the train.

“Thoughts and prayers are with the MTA conductor and individual involved in incident today at the 86th St. R train station in Bay Ridge,” Gentile wrote on Wednesday.
