Cops, firefighters, military veterans and senior citizens will all be the guests of honor at various ceremonies and events at Saint Anselm Catholic Academy as the Bay Ridge institution celebrates Catholic Schools Week (Jan. 29-Feb. 4).

Among the highlights of the week’s activities will be a Veterans and First Responders Luncheon on Feb. 1 for parents who are active or retired military service members and law enforcement officers. The luncheon, which will take place in Meletia Hall in school at 365 83rd St., is part of Family Appreciation Day.

John Quaglione, chairman of the Board of Directors of the academy, announced a series of events to take place in connection with Catholic Schools Week. The theme of Catholic Schools Week this year is “Catholic Schools: Communities of Faith, Knowledge and Service.”

The purpose of Catholic Schools Week, which is celebrated across the U.S., is to demonstrate the strength of religious education, officials said. Nearly all of the schools in the Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn take part by hosting open houses and special events. Catholic Schools Week has been celebrated sine 1974, according to the National Catholic Education Association.

At Saint Anselm Catholic Academy, the events were expected to get underway on Sunday, Jan. 29 with a Day of Faith and a special Mass. The principal of the academy is James McKeon.

The week’s activities will include a Day of Service, a Day of Knowledge and Kindness, a Family Appreciation Day and a Student Appreciation Day. The school will cap off the celebration on Feb. 3 with a second Day of Faith.

On Feb. 2, students will welcome their grandparents for a “Junior/Senior Tea” in Meletia Hall, according to Quaglione, who said the get-together will feature a tribute to grandparents for the contributions they make to the lives of the students.

Students are also being encouraged to bring canned foods to school on Feb. 2 for the Saint Anselm Parish Pantry.

Last year’s Junior/Senior Tea was a major success, according to school officials, who said Meletia Hall was filled to capacity with young children and their grandparents sitting together having tea, croissants, biscuits, waffles and other foods. The youngsters also sang songs for the senior citizens.

“Catholic Schools Week is an opportunity for Saint Anselm Catholic Academy to showcase our school curriculum and programs, our future plans, and the educational success of our students,” Quaglione told the Brooklyn Eagle. “Saint Anselm Catholic Academy continues to be a strong institution dedicated to education, service and faith, and we hope to further make that known this week to our current and future students.”
