Happy new year, Brooklyn! As we usher in 2017, the Brooklyn Eagle wanted to share with our readers the most widely read, viewed and shared articles, videos and photos of 2016.

This past year was monumental for Brooklyn in many ways. Over the last 12 months, America saw Hillary Clinton, who had her headquarters in Brooklyn Heights, become the first woman to be a major party’s nominee. The Democratic presidential nominee runner-up was Bernie Sanders, who was born in Midwood, and the Brooklyn Navy Yard played host to a heated debate between the two candidates.

Other important events in Kings County included the passing of renowned Brooklyn District Attorney Ken Thompson and the final city approval of the sale of the Brooklyn Heights Library, which will soon have a 36-story luxury building in its place and will forever change the Brooklyn skyline.

Other top headlines included the Jehovah’s Witnesses sale of their Brooklyn Heights headquarters at 25-30 Columbia Heights, the announcement of Mayor Bill de Blasio’s $2.5 billion streetcar plan and the continuing controversy over the city’s plan to build two residential towers at Brooklyn Bridge Park’s Pier 6.

In sports, the Islanders made a heroic run to the playoffs and won their first playoff series since 1993 on their home ice at Barclays Center. The Brooklyn Nets, on the other hand, ushered in the post-Billy King era and started a rebuilding phase with the signings of point guard Jeremy Lin, general manager Sean Marks and head coach Kenny Atkinson.

Lastly, the Eagle wants to sincerely thank all of our readers for their loyalty over this past year.
