~BBP WATERFRONT GALA RAISES RECORD $1.35 MILLION: In a night full of celebrities and New Yorkers alike, the Brooklyn Black Tie Ball near Brooklyn Bridge Park’s Pier 2 basketball courts, raised a record $1.35 millionfor the park last week. The event, organized by the Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy, was hosted by television and film star Jon Hamm with a musical performance from Grammy-winner Norah Jones. The fifth annual event of its kind raised money to support over 600 activities and events at the park. “It’s a fundraiser for Brooklyn … let’s get that guy famously from St. Louis,” said Hamm jokingly. “Brooklyn HeightsGreenpoint … Los Feliz? Is there an Upper East Side? I honestly don’t know that much about it.” Other guests at the gala included, Mayor Bill de Blasio, host of CNBC’s “Mad Money” Jim Cramer, NBA star Mike Dunleavy, actress Keri Russell and her boyfriend actor Matthew Rhys(via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle and NYP)

~SEARCH BEGINS FOR NEW CB6 DISTRICT MANAGER: Longtime CB6 District Manager Craig Hammerman has submitted his resignation from his $121,000-a-year position, which will go in effect on Oct. 20, according to Hammerman’s attorney and published accounts. Now the board is faced withhiring its first new district manager in 27 years. In that position, Hammerman represented the neighborhoods of Carroll GardensCobble HillGowanus,Park Slope and Red Hook. Hammerman was arrested two times in April on charges of stalking and harassing an ex-girlfriend. He went on medical leave for roughly five months following the arrests. His lawyer, however, said that the charges will likely be dismissed and the court proceedings had nothing to do with Hammerman’s decision to submit his resignation. “He was upset and distracted at work,” she said. “He didn’t want anything to reflect negatively on the Community Board. He was in the same job for 27 years — since his early 20s.” (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)

~SHIPPING CONTAINER TOWNHOUSE BUILT FOR WILLIAMSBURG FAMILY: There is currently a couple with two kids and two cats living inside of stacked and sliced shipping containers on a Williamsburg corner. The couple wanted a unique home, so shipping container specialists LOT-EK built them “Carroll House.” The Manhattan-based firm stacked containers three wide and two long, with three high at the front and two high at the back. They then sliced off part of the lower back to create a slope design. Windows on the front facade and slits along the side allow light into the obelisk while the inside resembles a quirky luxury pad with a fireplace, library, and wood-paneled floors and ceilings. The project marked LOT-EK’s first complete house in New York City. “We’ve built plenty of stuff outside of the U.S., and outside of New York, but to have a proof of concept of this size and magnitude and completeness in New York has been a big challenge and a big accomplishment,” firm founder Giuseppe Lignano said. (via Dezeen)

~MAN SPEWS HATE SPEECH ON BROOKLYN L TRAIN: See on video as a subway rider douses a man, who calls himself a lawyer, with soup while others push him out of a Brooklyn-bound L train after he began spewing hate speech at them. “First amendment, first amendment, n—-r, n—-r, n—-r, n—-r, n—-r, n—-r, n—-r, n—-r,” the man yells in the crowded train while gripping a Lime-A-Rita and swaying around. The video shows other riders arguing with him before the train stops and they kick him off. He rushes back into the train after he was kicked out only to be pushed out again, falling down between the platform and the train. When he tries to enter again, he gets the taste of some yellow soup. After riders shove him out once more, the doors of the train close. The video promptly ends with a rider yelling, “Get your hate speech out of here.” (via PIX11)

~NEW LEGISLATION IMPOSES REGULATIONS ON HOOKAH ESTABLISHMENTS: Councilmember Vincent Gentile helped pass a citywide bill that’s been seven years in the making. The new legislation imposes more stringent health and safety regulations that hookah establishments will have to adhere to. As with the case of cigarette smoking being prohibited indoors under the current law, hookah smoke will be added to that prohibition. “Any way you cut it, hookah smoke is no joke,” said Gentile. “It is not a safe smoking alternative and restricting minors makes the decision to smoke up to those of adult age. New York took a step toward stamping out hookah bars with a bill that bans new ones.” The new law will not take effect, however, until MayorBill de Blasio has signed off on it. (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)

EAGLE SPORTS: Three points in three games. Not exactly the result Islanders head coach Doug Weight was looking for following a 6-0-2 preseason, during which he emphasized the importance of getting out of the gate fast following the franchise’s brutal start to the 2016-17 campaign. But the Isles will take it as they head out on a three-game West Coast swing after salvaging a point in Monday afternoon’s 3-2 shootout loss to St. Louis in front of a sparse crowd of 10,673 at Downtown Brooklyn’s Barclays Center. “It’s a big point,” Weight said. “Being down 2-0 to that hockey club, home or road, we’ll take the point.” (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)
