~STARVED, STRANDED SAILOR RESCUED OFF BROOKLYN: An ill-prepared sailor was stranded at sea for four days with no food, no gas, a ripped sail and barely any water. Officials say he’ll be okay after he was spotted not far off the southern Brooklyn shores and rescued by NYPD’s Harbor Unit. A 911 call from a fisherman notified the police about the 26-foot boat drifting through the waters. The 41-year-old man had set out Manhattan-bound from Fire Island when he ran out of gas and his sail ripped. His cell phone had died and he had no radio, killing any chance of contacting help. A source told the New York Post, “He’s clearly a newbie sailor who didn’t know what he was doing.” (via NYP)
~FERAL CATS ARE INDUSTRY CITY RESIDENTS TOO: A feral cat colonyin Industry City in Sunset Park was removed by a Brooklyn extermination company and people are not happy about it. Nearby residents were stunned to find out the cats were taken by Squash Exterminating and dumped near Leif Ericson Park and Gerritsen Beach. “My heart is wrenched out of my chest,” said Jennifer Petito, an Industry City security guard. “They were a part of me.” While community members and animal rights activists were outraged, Assemblywoman Linda Rosenthal also said she plans to introduce legislation to protect feral cats and punish illegal killing or dumping of the animals. Industry City CEO Andrew Kimball apologized for the incident and said they were looking for the cats. (via NYDN)
~GRIMM/DONOVAN RACE SETS UP POLITICAL CIVIL WAR: Former Congressmember Michael Grimm’s announcement on Sunday that he is mounting a political comeback to try and regain his House seat in 2018 represented the first shot fired in a Civil War in local Republican Party politics and set up the intriguing specter of a convicted felon running against an ex-district attorney. At a rally on Sunday, Grimm announced that he will run to take back the seat he once held representing the 11th Congressional District. The seat is currently held by Republican Dan Donovan, the former Staten Island district attorney. Grimm served in Congress from 2010 until 2015, when he abruptly resigned after pleading guilty to a federal charge of tax fraud, a charge that landed him in a federal prison for seven months. Donovan won the congressional seat in a special election held in May 2015, a few months after Grimm resigned. Donovan easily won re-election in November 2016. (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)

EAGLE SPORTS: On the 40th anniversary of Pele’s last professional soccer match, the New York Cosmos displayed a complete performance, defeating Puerto Rico FC 1-0, snapping a nine-game winless streak and moving into a playoff spot. Although the announced attendance at MCU Park on Sunday of 3,733 fell short of the 75,646 fans who flocked to Giants Stadium on Oct. 1, 1977 to see the Brazilian’s final game, the result was the same: a one-goal victory for the Cosmos. “It gives you the possibility to continue to work the right way and believe in what we’re doing,” said Cosmos head coach Giovanni Savarese of the win. “It was very important for us to get the three points.” He added, “The guys had a very solid performance today, I thought the second half was even better. At the end, we found the goal in the opportunities that we created and at the right moment for us to go up 1-0.”(via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)
