CALIFORNIA – A Toast to the Nobel: Scientists Barry Barish, left, and Kip Thorne, both of the California Institute of Technology, share a toast to celebrate winning the Nobel Prize in Physics Tuesday in Pasadena, Calif. Barish and Thorne won the Nobel Physics Prize on Tuesday for detecting faint ripples flying through the universe, the gravitational waves predicted a century ago by Albert Einstein that provide a new understanding of the universe.

GEORGIA – Mother of Slain Officer Mourns: Patricia Tinney Brewer, the mother of slain Polk County police detective Kristen Hearne, and Hearne’s surviving 3-year-old son Isaac make an emotional eulogy from the podium during her funeral attended by hundreds of law enforcement officials, family, and friends on Tuesday at the Victory Baptist Church in Rockmart, Ga. Hearne was killed while acting as a backup on what appeared to be a routine stolen car investigation when she was ambushed by a Walker County man with a long rap sheet and an outstanding warrant for his arrest.
