ON THIS DAY IN 1954, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “Cabbie Dies, Shot by Cop in Bar Brawl.”

The article focused on a bar fight that broke out after a man reported his coat stolen, which resulted in a cab driver dying in the struggle.

“One of the men at the bar, Frank Rodriguez, 38, of 662 Park Ave., brother of the tavern owner, reportedly told the cop, ‘No cop is going to take this place over.’ At this point, a free-for-all started,” the Eagle reported.

FEBRUARY IS NATIONAL BLACK HISTORY MONTH. Its official statement reads that it is a month to “celebrate giants of the civil rights movement and countless other men and women whose names are etched in the hearts of their loved ones and the cornerstones of the country they helped to change. We pause to reflect on our progress and our history — not only to remember, but also to acknowledge our unfinished work. We reject the false notion that our challenges lie only in the past, and we recommit to advancing what has been left undone.”

TODAY IS THE ANNIVERSARY OF THE BLACK MARIA STUDIO. The first moving picture studio was built at Thomas Edison’s laboratory compound in West Orange, N.J. The wooden structure was covered with black tar paper and had a sharply sloping roof hinged at one edge so that half of it could be raised to admit sunlight. The theater was mounted on a pivot, enabling it to swing around to follow the changing position of the sun. Though the structure was officially called a Kinetographic Theater, it was nicknamed the “Black Maria” because it resembled the old-fashioned black police wagons, also called Black Marias, that were common earlier in the century.

THE FIRST SESSION OF SUPREME COURT WAS HELD ON THIS DAY IN 1790. The U.S. Supreme Court met for the first time in New York City, with Chief Justice John Jay presiding.
