Brooklyn Bridge Park’s got the greenest lawn in town this winter

Green Day. In Brooklyn Bridge Park.

In the dead of winter, a lush lawn has taken shape at the Brooklyn Heights end of the popular park.

It’s part of the sound-attenuating landscaping that diminishes the noise heard by park visitors from traffic on the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway. The highway hangs over Furman Street at the edge of the park.

The vast expanse of green grass is a newly created terraced lawn near the park’s Joralemon Street entrance.

The terraces stand on a spot that had been asphalt-paved. Summer-time Smorgasburg was held there in years past.

This area, which is referred to as the Pier 5 uplands, is getting a total of 4.6 acres of new green space.

Despite the rigors of winter weather, construction crews are toiling on the Pier 5 uplands — and also out on the water, on various piers.

The other day, we snapped photos of the new grassy landscape as well as the breathtaking vistas of Lower Manhattan seen by Brooklyn Bridge Park visitors.
