McCabe touts Storobin’s endorsement of him

City Council candidate Liam McCabe said his campaign has picked up a lot of steam with a recent endorsement from former Republican state Sen. David Storobin.

Storobin called McCabe “a proven winner who is ready to fight for and protect his constituents.”

Storobin, a lawyer who fled the former Soviet Union as a child, represented Brooklyn’s 27th State Senate District (Sheepshead Bay-Brighton Beach-Midwood) for six months, from June to December 2012. He had won a special election in June of 2012 for the seat.

Storobin said he was supporting McCabe’s candidacy for the Bay Ridge City Council seat because McCabe “understands what it means to struggle and to succeed in Brooklyn.”

McCabe, a former aide to U.S. Rep. Dan Donovan, is one of three candidates running for the Republican nomination for the 43rd Council District, a district that covers Bay Ridge and Dyker Heights and includes parts of Bensonhurst.

Bob Capano, who served as director of Brooklyn community boards for former borough president Marty Markowitz, and John Quaglione, deputy chief of staff to state Sen. Marty Golden (R-C-Bay Ridge-Southwest Brooklyn), are also seeking the GOP nomination.

The Democrats who have announced for the race are Justin Brannan, a former special assistant to Schools Chancellor Carmen Fariña; Kevin Peter Carroll, Democratic district leader of the 64th Assembly District; and Nancy Tong, district leader of the 47th Assembly District.

McCabe, who worked on Storobin’s successful Senate campaign in 2012, said he is grateful for the endorsement.

“I respect David. He showed strength and courage when he fled to the United States for a better life and he worked hard to succeed in Brooklyn, and to honor Brooklyn and our residents by committing to work in public service. Like David and so many others who have not taken the easy road into politics, I come with energy and commitment to serve,” McCabe said.

The 43rd Council District is currently represented by Democrat Vincent Gentile, who has held the post since 2003. Under New York City’s term limits law, Gentile is ineligible to run for another term.
