The Brooklyn Women’s Bar Association hosted its annual Judiciary Night at the New York State Appellate Division, Second Department, on Wednesday night.

The two-hour event included a brief presentation of the borough’s newest judges to the Women’s Bar, followed by a dinner where the judges and lawyers had the chance to mingle in a relaxed atmosphere.

“I was president of the Brooklyn Women’s Bar 30 years ago,” Hon. Miriam Cyrulnik said in her introduction. “I cannot tell you how heartwarming it is to see the continued growth of this association, the expansion and the recognition that this organization is getting for its mission and all of the work that it has done. I commend the current leadership and I commend all of you. If you are not yet members, I encourage you to be a part of it. If you are a young attorney, it is a good way to get noticed.”

Brief presentations were made by Sara Gozo, president of the Brooklyn Women’s Bar Association (BWBA), Hon. Sylvia Hinds-Radix, a past president; and Hon. Dora Irizarry, chief judge of Brooklyn’s Federal Court.

“I have a very special place in my heart for the Brooklyn Women’s Bar Association,” Irizarry said. “You have always been very supportive of our judiciary and of maintaining the highest for the profession. I applaud you for all of the good work that you do. I also want to congratulate all of the newly elected, the appointed and reappointed judges. There are difficult times ahead and we all need to rise to the task.”

Irizarry’s court has been the center of the battle over President Donald Trump’s “Muslim ban” and without sounding the alarm, she warned the attorneys in the room that their support will be needed in the coming months.

“We’ve had a very exciting past week at our court, to say the least,” Justice Irizarry said. “We can expect more excitement to come, I am sure…but that’s what we took an oath to do — to do justice, to uphold the constitution, to uphold the laws of this country and to treat everyone fairly without favor or any other regard to any status of the person. As we forge ahead in these uncertain times, I hope that we will all find the strength and the stamina to continue to do this work.”

Gozo also spoke about the BWBA’s Heart Healthy event, which will take place at Marco Polo Restaurant on Feb. 16. That event, which is the first of its kind, will aim to help raise awareness of the dangers of heart disease.

“We encourage everyone to attend,” Gozo said of the Heart Healthy night. “We will be discussing heart disease and prevention. We ask everyone to wear red to show your support to fighting heart disease. We’ll also have some dark chocolate and red wine, which are good for the heart. It will be a fun evening and we encourage you to attend and support that event as well.”
