Coney Island will welcome the Year of the Rooster at a special celebration of the Lunar New Year to be hosted by a trio of local lawmakers.

Assemblymember Pamela Harris is working with state Sen. Diane Savino and Councilmember Mark Treyger to host a celebration for the 2017 Lunar New Year on Thursday, Feb. 23, at Liberation Diploma Plus High School, at 2865 W. 19th St., starting at 4 p.m.

“Welcoming in the Lunar New Year is a cheerful and longstanding tradition in our community,” Harris said. “I’m excited to bring Brooklyn families together to honor and celebrate our neighbors’ culture.”

The event, which will celebrate Chinese culture, will feature traditional performances and songs and will include free refreshments. Traditionally, the Lunar New Year is a time to wish others good fortune, health, prosperity and happiness, Harris said.

“With the New Year comes new opportunities to bring us closer and appreciate the diverse cultures that make our city and state great,” Savino said. “I hope all who can will join us for this occasion.”

Treyger said Southwest Brooklyn offers a diverse mix of cultures. “Events like this showcase just that by highlighting some of the heritage and traditions that make our area so vibrant,” he said.
