On March 9, Heights and Hills and BloomAgainBklyn will team up to host an “An Evening of Flowers and Giving” at The Heights Casino.  The event features two of the city’s leading floral designers from Opalia Flowers and FlowerSchool New York — Phoebe Crary and Meghan Riley.

Crary and Riley will conduct a flower workshop for attendees whose creations will be donated to local senior health care centers.  All of the flowers used in creating the arrangements will be unsold flowers donated by Trader Joe’s and Opalia Flowers.

Heights and Hills is one of the largest providers of supportive services for older adults in Brooklyn and their families, providing services that address their physical and emotional challenges.

“While Heights and Hills has many partnerships and collaborations, our partnership with BloomAgain is one of my favorites,” Judy Willig, executive director of Heights and Hills told the Brooklyn Eagle. “Most of the work that Heights and Hills staff does every day ensures that older people have what they need in order to age successfully in their homes — enough money to pay their bills, enough food to eat, safe housing, access to health care and getting their chores of daily living taken care of.

“Our partnership with BloomAgain and our Friendly Visitor programs both allow us to go one step further and enhance peoples’ lives by bringing joy and beauty into their homes and reminding them that they are still part of a larger community that cares,” Willig added.

BloomAgainBklyn is a community-based, nonprofit organization that takes unsold or once-used flowers destined for the trash and refurbishes them into new arrangements which are then distributed by volunteers to homebound seniors, local nursing home residents and others in need.

The organization’s goal is to create an uplifting experience for those who may not regularly have visitors or receive flowers and also facilitate positive interactions between volunteers and recipients.

“Since BloomAgainBklyn started almost three years ago, we have formed a close collaboration with Heights and Hills and its Friendly Visiting Program where their volunteers bring flowers to community-dwelling older adults,” Caroline Gates Anderson, founder of BloomAgainBklyn, explained. “We have also conducted joint flower workshops arranged with Heights and Hills with groups like the Junior League of Brooklyn, Black Alumni of Stanford University and Morgan Stanley.

“The flower arrangements created by the volunteers from these organizations have then been distributed to the older adults served by Heights and Hills.  It has been a wonderful partnership and we are so pleased to co-host this special ‘Evening of Flowers and Giving’ event with them.”

An Evening of Flowers and Giving will be held at The Heights Casino, Governor’s Room, 75 Montague St. with wine and hors d’oeuvres from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tickets for the event are $250 with the proceeds going to Heights and Hills and BloomAgainBklyn.
