The Knights of Pythias sponsored a pancake breakfast at Tom’s Restaurant in Coney Island on Sunday. Proceeds from the breakfast will go toward a humanitarian fund that benefits servicemen, servicewomen and veterans, which includes sending them boxes filled with food supplies and various necessities.

Tom’s Restaurant was packed with supporters who stopped by to enjoy a variety of pancakes, omelets and scrambled eggs. Giant banana-cinnamon pancakes, streusel pancakes and chocolate chip pancakes were the hit of the day.

The Knights of Pythias is a non-sectarian fraternity that was founded in Washington, D.C. by Justus H. Rathbone in 1864. It was the first fraternal organization to receive a charter under an act of U.S. after careful examination by then-President Abraham Lincoln.

Lincoln was so impressed that an organization would want to volunteer its time and money for the benefit of the betterment of mankind that he gave his blessing to the Knights of Pythias. It was approved on May 5, 1870.

The fraternal order of the Knights of Pythias is dedicated to the cause of universal peace and it follows three basic principles: friendship, charity and benevolence.

The charities supported by the New York Grand Lodge include The Pythian Humanitarian Fund, Diabetes Research Association, Pythian Camp and the Special Olympics.
