It’s March Madness.

And we’re not talking about the NCAA basketball tournament that is scheduled to begin this evening.

A storm named Stella is slamming Brooklyn.

At Grand Army Plaza, sleet is lashing the iconic Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Memorial Arch. A sand truck circled earlier this morning, making the way safer for the few motorists who are brave/imprudent enough to venture out on Brooklyn streets.

The Beaux Arts-style arch, built in 1892 at the main entrance of Prospect Park, has surely seen its share of snowstorms. But this one’s a doozy.

The first flakes of snow started falling in Brooklyn just after midnight. So picturesque.

But before dawn, disgusting sleet took over. It stings when it hits pedestrians’ faces. Because of wind gusts, umbrellas are useless. As we were typing this story in our nearby Brooklyn Heights office, we heard thunder. Yikes.

Don’t go out. Seriously. It’s Nasty.

Public schools throughout Brooklyn and the rest of the city are closed. Above-ground subway service was shut down at 4 a.m.

With any luck, those of you who are looking at these photos have the day off work and are in your pajamas, sipping hot cocoa.
