The article focused on a police raid of a Brooklyn apartment that was filled with thousands of dollars worth of opium, heroin and morphine.

“In the bedroom of the apartment the raiding party found Salvatore Palmieri, 38, of 369 Broome St., and Mrs. Angelina Ruoti, 35, a striptease dancer. In the same room were found a fully loaded 38-caliber revolver and two opium pipes that had just been used, according to police,” the Eagle reported.

EDWARD WESTON WAS BORN ON THIS DAY IN 1886. Considered one of the greatest photographers of the 20th century, his work gradually changed from a self-described pictorial style to one that was more realistic yet abstract. He created a large body of work that included nudes, barren landscapes (especially in California and Mexico) and natural still lifes. Weston died in 1958 in California.

MIETEK PEMPER WAS BORN ON THIS DAY IN 1920. In his position as personal typist to Amon Goeth, commandant of the Plaszow forced labor camp in Poland, Pemper learned that all labor camp inmates not engaged in work on the war effort would be killed. He convinced industrialist Oskar Schindler to convert his enamel works to the production of grenade parts. He then falsified records to suggest that certain Plaszow inmates had essential manufacturing skills and compiled lists of inmates to be transferred to Schindler’s factory. These, along with names compiled by Itzhak Stern, later became known as “Schindler’s list.” The scheme saved the lives of 1,200 people. Born in Poland, Pemper died in Germany in 2011.
