ON THIS DAY IN 1912, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “Brooklyn Arsene Lupin Writes Notes to Police.”

The article focused on a Flatbush burglar who taunted police with their inability to catch him.

“A particular and fastidious gentleman of crime is this burglar. He takes what suits his fancy — clothing, sometimes money now and then, bric-a-brac, silver or such other things as his taste for the nonce suggests. Interesting, and at the same time exasperating as the thief is, residents of the district are almost repaid by the bewilderment of the police who cannot catch a man who leaves clue after clue behind him and taunts them with their inability by writing letters to them, which he leaves in the homes of his victims,” the Eagle reported.
