First look at Brooklyn Bridge Park Boathouse

Visitors to Brooklyn Bridge Park (BBP) this spring might notice a new structure rising in the hills east of Pier 5’s popular picnic area.

The squat building is a new boathouse for the park’s free community boating programs. It will also include restrooms and space for public programming.

The boathouse is part of the Pier 5 uplands project, which will add five acres of new parkland to BBP. Amenities will include sloping and terraced lawns, a grove with a flexible seating area and a rain garden. The sound attenuating berm will wrap east of the boathouse to help block traffic noise.

The uplands and boathouse are scheduled to open sometime this summer.

Another new building that will house park maintenance and operations is going up at the southern end of the park. Also planned: A new access point at the Montague Street Turnaround (a circular roadway running beneath the Promenade which does not connect with Montague Street above).
