A Brooklyn gang member was convicted on Friday of taking part in an illegal drug distribution ring and for possession of multiple firearms and sentenced to 101 months in prison by U.S. District Judge I. Leo Glasser, Acting U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York Bridget M. Rohde announced on Friday.

Justin Smith, who was known to frequent the Gowanus and Wyckoff Gardens housing projects in Boerum Hill, was sentenced following his conviction after pleading guilty on Oct. 28, 2016 to multiple counts of illegal drug distribution and firearm offenses.

“Justin Smith, a gang member and convicted drug dealer who regularly kept and carried illegal firearms to protect his criminal organization, used an apartment in Wyckoff Gardens as a base of operations to sell crack and heroin, putting the residents of that community at great risk,” Rohde said. “This office, together with its law enforcement partners, will work tirelessly to address this type of dangerous conduct.”

Smith was convicted of conspiring to possess and distribute illegal narcotics in and around the Gowanus Houses and Wyckoff Gardens between September 2013 and April 2015, according to officials.

NYPD officers entered Smith’s stash house located at 185 Nevins St. on June 18, 2014 and discovered him with drugs, ammo and a gun. Officers also recovered 80 plastic bags of crack cocaine, 51 glassine envelopes containing heroin, two containers featuring a mixture of heroin and cocaine, $1,018 in cash and a digital kitchen scale used to weigh drugs. They also found 1,250 small unused bags intended to distribute crack and 212 empty glassine envelopes used for heroin distribution.

The gun they found was a stolen 9mm caliber semiautomatic handgun. With it they found 31 rounds of 9mm ammo and nine rounds of .45 caliber ammo.
