The Catholic Lawyers Guild of Brooklyn continued a tradition that goes back to its inception with its annual Shrove Tuesday Luncheon that marks the beginning of the Lenten season.

The current tradition includes meeting at the St. Charles Borromeo Church in Brooklyn Heights for mass before the group moves to the Brooklyn Bar Association building on Remsen Street for lunch. Each year it honors one of its members at the luncheon, and this year’s honoree was Maria Aragona.

Aragona is a law clerk for Justice Kenneth Sherman and is also a trustee of the Catholic Lawyers Guild. Guild President Hon. Lizette Colon called her a “rising star” in the organization and explained how it was an easy choice to pick her as this year’s honoree.

“She has been a rising star, not only in the Catholic Lawyers Guild, but in the legal community,” Colon said. “She does anything and everything for the Catholic Lawyers Guild and knows how to anticipate things that we don’t even ask her to do. As an attorney, she works with wisdom and the judgement of someone way beyond her years.

“Her selfless service is the exact example of all that we stand for: helping others without looking for remuneration or even recognition,” she continued. “Nothing is too small, nothing is too large for her to take on. She’ll go out of her way to help others.”

Aragona is the most recent person to be honored during Shrove Tuesday. Last year, the Guild honored Lucy DiSalvo. It’s a tradition that goes back to 2002, when then-President Greg Cerchione decided that giving out an award would boost attendance for the event.

“I am truly honored and extremely humbled to be the recipient of this year’s Shrove Tuesday Recognition Award,” Aragona said after Colon presented her with a plaque. “First and foremost, I would like to thank God for all of the blessings he has provided me. I like to express my sincerest gratitude to the Catholic Lawyer’s Guild for bestowing me with this great honor.”
