ON THIS DAY IN 1918, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “Urges Mayor to Act in Labor Crisis on New Subway Work.”

The article focused on subway construction halts as a result of low wages.

“Mr. Whitney fears that these 7,000 men may leave subway construction and take places offered to them at higher wages in other lines of work. He declares that there is a need for a direct, businesslike adjustment between the city and the subway contractors on a basis that the contractors forego all profits on their work, past or future,” the Eagle reported.
