Ten students from Poly Prep Country Day School are planning to take a nine-day trip to Costa Rica, but they’re not going to Central America to enjoy the beaches. Led by teacher Linda Aponte, the students will be participating in a sea turtle ecology program through Ecology Project International (EPI), a conservation organization that works with scientists and international students in places like Costa Rica, Ecuador, Belize, Baja and Hawaii.

The Poly Prep journey will begin on March 18 and last until March 26. Poly Prep is a private school that has campuses in Dyker Heights and Park Slope.

During their stay, the Poly Prep students will be splitting their time between EPI’s Caribbean turtle reserve and a rainforest biological station.

At the turtle reserve, students will conduct a turtle census, a process that will consist of walking on the beach each night in search of nesting leatherback sea turtles.

When groups find adult turtles, they will carry out research to gather information that will increase scientists’ understanding of the species.

In the rainforest, the group will take nighttime hikes to experience Costa Rica’s animal and plant life.

EPI, which is assisting in the planning of the trip, works to improve science education and conservation efforts worldwide through field-based student-scientist partnerships.
