Plus, NYC’s resident urban archaeologist digs inGowanus for a rather untraditional treasure, and a photographer puts a face to gun violence in America. The Rundown

~SEVEN’S COMPANY: Seven hopefuls are officially vying for the Democratic nomination for the Brooklyn district attorney seat left vacant when Ken Thompson died last year. The NYT assesses that the candidates – who are all jostling to stake their claim in Thompson’s legacy – are “running in a pack”…for now. (via the NYT)

~BUSTED IN BROOKLYN: Three Brooklyn medical clinics landed in the center of a “conspiracy” that flooded the black market with 6.3 million oxycodone pills and pumped more than $24 million into the clinics in question, all while defrauding Medicare and Medicaid. Former state assemblyman Alec Brook-Krasny from Brooklyn was indicted in the case. (via the NYT)

~HAVE YOUR SAY IN GOWANUS: The Department of City Planning (DCP) is piloting an online tool called Plan Gowanus as a way to let the public get involved in the ongoing Gowanus Neighborhood Planning Study. The Plan Gowanus website lets residents tell DCP what they like and what they think needs improvement within the neighborhood, using an interactive map. (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)

~AN UNTRADITIONAL TREASURE HUNT: Urban archaeologist Joan Geismar, who has made a name for herself sniffing out centuries-old outhouses across the city and whose inaugural NYC dig yielded the discovery of a 100-ft 18th century ship in Manhattan, is now helping NYCHA ensure that construction of flood resiliency upgrades at the Gowanus Houses won’t disturb any archaeological remains. (via DNAinfo)

~ALL ABOARD, ONE MONTH EARLY: The Rockaway NYC Ferry route, which connects to the Brooklyn Army Terminal and Pier 11 in Manhattan, will launch a month ahead of schedule on May 1. It’s part of five new ferry routes covering 60 miles of NYC waterways. (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)

~ON AN AVERAGE DAY, 91 AMERICAN ARE KILLED BY GUNS: Of those 91, seven are children. To put faces to the numbers and better understand the pain and suffering of those affected by gun violence, documentary photographer and DUMBO resident Joe Quint travels the country taking photos of victims of gun violence. Through his photographs, Quint tells the compelling, diverse story of the impact of gun violence on injured survivors, family members of victims and witnesses who — while not physically injured — suffer many of the same emotional and psychological scars as those who were actually shot. (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)

~OUT WITH MORE THAN A BANG: A local group of musicians calling themselves the Kosciuszko Philharmonic Orchestra is petitioning for the city to allow them to play Tchaikovsky’s “1812 Overture” during the detonation of the old Kosciuszko Bridge. The overture has been long associated with acts of grand destruction, and is often accompanied by cannons. However, the petition remains hundreds of John Hancocks shy of its 1,000 signature goal. ~BROOKLYNITE OF THE DAY: Happy birthday to Goldie Sohn, who turned 105 last weekend!
