With the return of warmer weather, it’s the perfect time to clean house — out with the old and in with the new. And that applies to old clothing as well as broken electronic devices and outdated medicine that needs to be properly disposed of.

State Sen. Marty Golden (R-C-I, Brooklyn), in the spirit of spring cleaning, has announced two events he is organizing in mid-April to keep Brooklyn clean and help residents clear out their homes and apartments of unwanted clothes and clutter.

Golden is partnering with a number of nonprofit and government agencies to offer free shredding services, electronic waste recycling, clothing and fashion collection and an opportunity for residents to safely dispose of old or unwanted medication.  Golden is also offering free rain barrels to homeowners who request them in advance.

Neighborhood residents are invited to join Golden at the two planned events. The first is scheduled for Saturday, April 22 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the St. Anselm Church parking lot (Fourth Avenue and 82nd Street). The second event will take place on Sunday, April 23, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Marine Park at the Avenue U Parking Lot (between East 33rd and Stuart streets).

“I am excited to host these events that will give residents an opportunity to get some of the unwanted items around their house properly disposed of,” said Golden.  “I trust that many in our community will take advantage of the chance to dispose of expired or unwanted medicine, shred the old papers, donate clean used clothing or get rid of the old televisions, computers and electronics we can no longer put out with our regular garbage collection.”

The events are supported by the AARP, GreenChip Electronic Waste Solutions, the New York City Department of Sanitation, Goodwill Industries of Greater New York and New Jersey, the New York City Police Department, the Drug Enforcement Administration and the New York CityDepartment of Environmental Protection.

For more information, or to reserve a rain barrel, call Sen. Golden’s office at (718) 238-6044.
