THE LEDE: Hello, and happy Friday! This morning, the EPA takes fire from a group of area environmental organizations, and a solar energy project tests the waters in Park Slope and Gowanus. Also, we bring you a little dose ofBrooklyn history and explain why there are so many cemeteries on the border with Queens. Plus, a building shaped like a molecular sugar crystal is set to rise on the Williamsburg waterfront. And finally, meet the reverend behind Brooklyn’s longest running live show. Have a sunny weekend!

IMPRINT: Quite a crowd on the cover of M Mag out of France.

The Rundown

~SOMETHING SMELLS FISHY: And it’s more than just the pungent fumes coming from the Gowanus Canal. A group of nine New York City and regional environmental organizations announced yesterday that they are pursuing legal action against the Environmental Protection Agency for allegedly failing to protect the health of people who swim, boat and fish in the city’s waterways and beyond. (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)

~CLOSE, BUT NO CIGAR: Settlement talks between the Brooklyn Heights Association (BHA) and the Brooklyn Bridge Park Corporation over a controversial development project inside Brooklyn Bridge Park have fallen through. Now, it’s full steam ahead for the lawsuit brought by BHA to block two residential towers at Pier 6, at the southern end of the park. (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)

~HERE COMES THE SUN: A solar energy project called Brooklyn Microgridis undertaking an experiment in small-scale energy trading in Park Slopeand Gowanus. No rooftop? No problem. Neighbors who have solar panels link up with those who don’t, but who want to buy clean energy, and engage in peer-to-peer trading. (via Curbed NY)

~BRING OUT YOUR DEAD…TO THE BROOKLYN-QUEENS BORDER: There are more than a dozen cemeteries lining the border, thanks to a number of factors dating to New York’s early days. After Manhattan promptly ran out of space (and fell susceptible to cholera outbreaks) the city looked for space elsewhere…and the rocky, rolling topography of the Brooklyn-Queens border was not so good for farming, but very good for a scenic cemetery, as cemeteries used to be popular leisure destinations. (via the NYT)

~HOW DO WE FEEL ABOUT A BUILDING SHAPED LIKE A SUGAR CRYSTAL?: The next stage of development at the old Domino Sugar Refinery will be a 42-story mixed use building…with architecture supposedly “inspired by the molecular pattern and forms of sugar crystals”…meaning a white, concrete facade shaped like two stacked Ls. Can’t picture that? Check out a rendered image of the building that will host 330 new apartments. (via Curbed NY)

~“CHURCH OF THE HOLY UNRULY” MEETS EVERY MONDAY NIGHT: TheReverend Vince Anderson and his Love Choir are Brooklyn’s longest running live show. They’ve jammed every Monday night for the past two decades, mostly in the vaudeville-like backroom of Union Pool. And yes, the Reverend is a real reverend who actually went to seminary school.
