Donovan invites students to enter congressional art contest

Calling all young artists! Here’s your chance to have your work displayed in the U.S. Capitol.

U.S. Rep. Dan Donovan said he is accepting submissions for the 2017 Congressional Art Competition, a contest that is open to high school students around the country.

A winning submission from each congressional district will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol for one year. Students can submit original paintings, drawings, collages, photographs, computer-generated art or a combination of genres.

Donovan (R-C-Southwest Brooklyn-Staten Island) represents the 11th Congressional District.

“The creativity and talent of our Staten Island and South Brooklyn high school students never ceases to amaze me. Each piece, whether a photo, painting or pencil sketch, highlights the unique perspectives and stories of student artists in our community, and I can’t wait to see this year’s entries,” he said in a statement.

Students must register online by May 2 at donovan.house.gov/art-competition in order to enter the contest. The deadline for submitting artworks is May 9. On that night, Donovan will host an art show with the participants and their families at the College of Staten Island. The judges will review the artworks and select a winner by the end of the night.

Last year’s winning art piece was a photo called “Free Spirit” by Staten Islander Robert Vitali, a student at the Packer Collegiate Institute. The photo depicted a Great Blue Heron in flight over Dongan Hills on Staten Island.

Carrie Guan, who had recently graduated from Bishop Kearney High School, also won recognition for her work in the 2016 contest.

Her painting, titled “Within a Girl,” depicted an eagle.
