THE LEDE: Happy National Beer Day, Brooklyn! In today’s news, domestic violence victims who don’t speak English will now have a better shot in court, a new trend is sweeping Bed-Stuy, and we have the latest update on how the EPA budget battle is playing out in New York…meanwhile, 27,000 gallons of diesel quietly leaked into Gravesend Bay last week. We recommend a long read about losing a spouse at age 36, and a profile on the inimitable Mister Rogers. Take a quick look at news from beyond Brooklyn, including a report showing that Americans still love political scandal, and news that the Dalai Lama remains “jolly.” We’ll see you againon Monday!

IMPRINT: Meticulous design on the cover of Italy’s Robinson.

~PEEK INSIDE THE CROWN HEIGHTS HOMELESS SHELTER: NY1 shares an exclusive look at the new residence that will house 132 homeless families from the Crown Heights area. The building, which is slated to open next month, is part of Mayor de Blasio’s hotly-contested plan to open 90 new shelters across the city. (via NY1)

~SCHUMER JUMPS INTO EPA BUDGET BATTLE: Sen. Chuck Schumer and Rep. Nydia Velázquez are joining forces to stymie Trump’s proposed $2.6 billion (that’s 31 percent) cut to the EPA’s budget. The cut, which was announced last month, would eliminate 3,200 EPA employees, or 19 percent of the agency’s workforce. “I will do everything in my power to beat back this radical effort to slash the EPA’s budget,” promises Schumer. (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)

~TRANSLATION IN THE COURTS: The state will now provide translation services for non-English speaking domestic violence victims in court. Assemblymember Helene Weinstein and Sen. Marisol Alcántara pushed to securing funding in the state budget to make it happen. (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)

~JUMP ON THE BED-STUY BANDWAGON: We Buy Gold is the newest art gallery to crop up in the quickly-gentrifying neighborhood of Bed-Stuy. Why Bed-Stuy, and why now? “I felt it incredibly important to begin where I live. The goal is to present shows that are challenging and … creating a space for us feels right, right now,” says Joeonna Bellorado-Samuels, who is launching the space. (via Hyperallergic)

~WANTED: CLIMATE CHANGE ART FOR RED HOOK: The City’sDepartment of Cultural Affairs and City Council Member Carlos Menchaca are calling for artists to submit proposals for temporary public art addressing climate change and flooding. The art will be displayed in Red Hook, which was slammed by Hurricane Sandy in 2012 and remains vulnerable to flooding and sea level rise, thanks to climate change. The budget is $20,000 and the deadline, quite fittingly, is April 22, Earth Day. (via Brownstoner)

~BASEBALLS, BATS AND TOMBSTONES: Approaching the 70th anniversary of the day Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier by stepping onto Ebbets Field, people are paying their respects to the late baseball great by leaving baseballs and bats at his grave in Cypress Hills Cemetery. While perhaps not as famous as Green-Wood Cemetery, Cypress Hills Cemetery is the resting place of notable Brooklynites Robinson and Mae West, among others. (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle, with photos

~ICYMI/27,000 GALLONS OF DIESEL IN THE GRAVESEND BAY: The spill occurred last week at the hands of Brooklyn company Bayside Fuel Depot. Response teams from the EPA, the Department of Environmental Conservation and the US Coast Guard, among others, sprang into action. However, none of the agencies were required to make a public announcement. BKLYNER does a deep-dive into the spill’s repercussions for Brooklyn. (via BKLYNER)
