ON THIS DAY IN 1954, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “60,000 Marching in Brooklyn’s Loyalty Day Parade.”

The article focused on the celebrations planned for Loyalty Day in Brooklyn.

“Borough President Cashmore, before he left on a trip to Italy, officially proclaimed today as ‘Loyalty Day in Brooklyn.’ He invited all veteran patriotic, civic, fraternal, trade union, educational and business groups to observe the day by displaying the American flag and by participating in the VFW ceremonies,” the Eagle reported.

It was created more than 65 years ago by Mental Health America to raise awareness about mental health conditions and the importance of mental wellness and promoting good mental health for all. One in four American adults lives with a diagnosable, treatable mental health condition.

“CITIZEN KANE” PREMIERED ON THIS DAY IN 1941. Orson Welles’ directorial masterpiece premiered at New York City’s RKO Palace. The premiere had been delayed almost three months due to studio jitters about what media magnate William Randolph Hearst’s reaction would be, since the film was a thinly disguised version of his life. The film’s multiple points of view, deep-focus photography and witty script made it a favorite with critics at the time. Nominated for nine Academy Awards, “Citizen Kane” won for Best Original Screenplay by Herman J. Mankiewicz and Welles. The film did not perform well commercially but is now regarded as one of the greatest American films.

GLENN FORD WAS BORN ON THIS DAY IN 1916. The Hollywood actor appeared in more than 100 films. His important roles were in “Gilda” with Rita Hayworth, “Blackboard Jungle” with Sidney Poitier, “3:10 to Yuma” and “The Rounders.” He won a Golden Globe Award in 1962 for his leading role in Frank Capra’s “Pocketful of Miracles.” Ford died in California in 2006.
