THE LEDE: Hello, and happy Fleet Week! This morning, we see the effects of the opioid epidemic seep into a specific Crown Heights community, and theDanes are filling a niche in the borough (and we’re not talking about pastries). Then, several high profile NYC organizations are pointedly RSVPing in the negative to the Puerto Rican Day Parade, and more than one change is afoot for the NYPD these days. And finally, Biggie Smalls will live to see another day in Bed-Stuy.

IMPRINT: A very straightforward question on a very straightforward coverof Bloomberg Businessweek.

~AHOY, IT’S FLEET WEEK!: Here’s your chance to meet and greet sailors and watch the Parade of Ships this morning as part of the celebration of the country’s maritime services.  (via The Brooklyn Daily Eagle and @brooklyndailyeagle)

~HOW THE OPIOID CRISIS TRICKLES DOWN IN BROOKLYN: As the renewed opioid epidemic rips through the country, it hits home in the Hasidic Jewish community in Crown Heights,  which has seen at least 10 overdose deaths since the first opioid overdoses hit the community in 2005. Last fall, about 650 people attended an event to educate Jewish families about the epidemic. “We’re affected by the secular world and the country is struggling with an epidemic,” says one member of the community whose friends and family have dealt with addiction. “It’s trickling down to the Jewish community and we’re suffering, as well.” (via DNAinfo)

~THE DANES ARE COMING (WITHOUT THE DANISHES): Walk through theWythe Avenue corridor in Williamsburg and find yourself in the unofficially christened neighborhood of “Little Denmark.” A number of Danish tech start-ups are hopping across the river and setting up shop in Brooklyn, where they are using the borough as an entrypoint to American consumers. Why Brooklyn? For one thing, recruiting for talent is easier, since the rate of unemployment is higher in the U.S. than in Denmark. For another, one entrepreneur says the relative openness of Brooklyn reminds him of his native Copenhagen. One drawback: The pastries at the fancy Williamsburg coffee shops, the Danes say, are not up to snuff. (via The Bridge)

~WHO’S SKIPPING THE PUERTO RICAN DAY PARADE?: Mayoral candidate and Brooklyn pol Nicole Malliotakis. And the Yankees and JetBlue. And more than a few members of the NYPD. It’s all because the organizers decided to honor Oscar Lopez Rivera, a political extremist who was implicated in the bombing at Fraunces Tavern in lower Manhattan in 1975 that killed four people. Who will attend the parade as usual? Mayor de Blasio. He told DNAinfo“All things considered, I understand why so many Puerto Ricans — that’s almost 700,000 people in this city — respect that he fought for Puerto Rico in their eyes. I don’t agree with the way he did it. But he did serve his time.” (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle, Gothamist, WNYC and DNAinfo)

~IF YOU FEEL LIKE YOU’RE SEEING MORE HEAVY WEAPONRY THAN USUAL, IT’S PROBABLY BECAUSE YOU ARE: The NYPD has ramped up security across the city following the Manchester bombing. Officials say the moment reminds us of threats to “soft targets” like concert venues, which should be factored into business plans. “Brooklynites and New Yorkers do not surrender to fear, just as they do not underestimate the importance of safeguarding themselves against those pursuing acts of violence,” says Brooklyn Borough President and former police officer Eric Adams(via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)

~A NEW POLICE UNIFORM: Starting next month, about 1,200 cops in Brooklyn will be required to don body cameras. The mandate builds on a smaller pilot program from 2014. “This is the evolution of policing,” says Police Commissioner James O’Neill. “And we have to evolve.”  O’Neill expects that all police will wear the cameras within two years. (via the NY Post)

~ACTUALLY, BIGGIE, YOU CAN STAY: Following severe backlash from hip-hop heads and Bed-Stuy residents, the owner of a building that hosts a two-story mural of hometown hero Notorious B.I.G. has reversed on his decision to wipe the mural. Bed-Stuy got that old thing back. (via DNAinfo)
