Brooklyn memorial Mass honors fallen NYPD heroes

A Mass was held at Saint Athanasius Roman Catholic Church on Monday, May 22 to honor the brave police officers who were assigned to patrol Brooklyn South and whose lives were cut short in the line of duty.

Assistant Chief Steven M. Powers, commanding officer of Patrol Borough Brooklyn South, spoke about what it means to be a police officer and recognized the 19 families who had lost loved ones.

Auxiliary Bishop of the Brooklyn Diocese James Massa officiated the Mass with assistance from Bishop of Brooklyn Nicholas DiMarzio, Rev. Msgr. David Cassato of St. Athanasius and Msgr. Robert Romano of Our Lady of Guadalupe, who are also department chaplains, and Msgr. Jamie Gigantiello, vicar for development for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn and pastor of Our Lady of Mount Carmel.

Also in attendance were Father Michael Perry of Our Lady of Refuge Church and Father Eugene Pappas from Three Hierarchs Greek Orthodox church.

Among those in attendance was the family of Wenjian Liu. Liu and his partner, Officer Rafael Ramos, were killed on Dec. 20, 2015 as they sat in their patrol car on a Brooklyn street.

Also there was the family of Kenneth Hansen of Harbor Drive, the family of John Finnegan of the 70th Detective Squad, the family of Anthony Mosomillo of the 67th precinct and the family of Robert E. Betsch of the 76th precinct. The officers present gave the parents of the slain officers a standing ovation.

Deputy Chief Charles M. Scholl, executive officer of operations at Patrol Borough Brooklyn South said, “This is an example of how the NYPD does not forget its members that made the ultimate sacrifice.”
