Brooklyn memorial Mass honors fallen NYPD heroes
A Mass was held at Saint Athanasius Roman Catholic Church on Monday, May 22 to honor the brave police officers who were assigned to patrol Brooklyn South and whose lives were cut short in the line of duty.
Assistant Chief Steven M. Powers, commanding officer of Patrol Borough Brooklyn South, spoke about what it means to be a police officer and recognized the 19 families who had lost loved ones.
Auxiliary Bishop of the Brooklyn Diocese James Massa officiated the Mass with assistance from Bishop of Brooklyn Nicholas DiMarzio, Rev. Msgr. David Cassato of St. Athanasius and Msgr. Robert Romano of Our Lady of Guadalupe, who are also department chaplains, and Msgr. Jamie Gigantiello, vicar for development for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn and pastor of Our Lady of Mount Carmel.
