Brooklyn Women’s Bar Association lunches with Justice Kathy Levine

Members of the Brooklyn Women’s Bar Association got an opportunity to sit down for another installment of “Lunch with a Judge” with Justice Katherine A. Levine, of the Kings County Supreme Court, last Tuesday, May 23.

The event gives bar association members an opportunity to get to know the various judges of Kings County in a relaxed atmosphere. The judges usually talk about their paths to the bench and take questions from the group.

“I always knew I wanted to be a lawyer,” said Levine, who spoke about growing up in a politically involved and progressive family.

Levine also spoke about her career starting at the Office of Appeals and Review in Washington, D.C. She moved back to New York for her “dream job” as NYC Corporation Counsel. She also spoke at length about working for the New York State United Teachers and eventually becoming a judge.

“I was good at cross-examination, but if you want to have a family — and that was equally important to me because I have two wonderful kids and a wonderful husband — it is a juggling act,” Levine said.

“Judge Robert J. Ward really spurred me onto thinking about becoming a judge because he was an amazing man who worked with the attorney,” Levine said. “He looked at it as a mutual venture, which is kind of how I approach being a judge. It’s not just that I’m the judge and I’m the authority. It’s up to the attorneys to inform me and for me to ask questions. It’s a very important approach because the judge is not an omnipotent entity.”

The Brooklyn Women’s Bar Association will host its annual dinner at the Liberty Warehouse in Red Hook on Thursday, June 15. This year’s honorees will be Hon. Nancy T. Sunshine, County Clerk and Commissioner of Jurors; and Lisa Schreibersdorf, executive director of Brooklyn Defender Services.
