Republican Berneda Jackson enters crowded City Council race in District 41

Lone Republican Challenges Nine Democrats for Open Seat

The Brooklyn Republican Party under the leadership of Executive Committee Chairman Ted Ghorra and Vice-Chairman Brian Doherty has endorsed Berneda Jackson in her run for Brooklyn’s 41st District City Council seat. Jackson is the only Republican in a crowded race against nine Democratic contenders for the open seat.

They are Alika Ampry-Samuel, Henry Butler, Leopold Cox, Kathleen Daniel, Jarnell Henderson, Moreen King, Deidre Olivera, Cory Provost and Boris Santos. District 41 includes Bedford-Stuyvesant, Crown Heights, Brownsville and East Flatbush.

Jackson is a community leader who has lived in the same building in Brownsville for 46 years. Last year Jackson ran for the New York State Assembly from District 55, but was defeated by incumbent Democrat Latrice Walker.

Jackson graduated from Touro College’s School of Education and Psychology.

Her priorities are education and senior care. She told the Brooklyn Eagle, “I believe that we need afterschool programs from ages 13 to 16, instead of building juvenile facilities. Moreover, I’m going to advocate for a stronger social security and Medicare safety net for our seniors.”

“In addition to all of this,” continued Jackson, “our community and the fine men in blue need to come together. We are going to do just that with a basketball game between the NYPD and the community. This, on top of expanding school choice for students, I believe will strengthen our communities. Lastly, tenants and landlords should band together to fight for property tax cuts and better water tax rates. With minds working together, I look forward to leading the 41st district.”

“The Brooklyn Republican Party, along with its Executive Committee, is thrilled to endorse Berneda Jackson,” said Ghorra. “We have gotten to know her from the time of her initial inclination to run and know that she is someone Brooklynites, particularly constituents in their respective districts, need in the City Council.”

Jackson’s GOP endorsement and lack of party challengers frees her up to strictly concentrate on the November general election.
