Downtown Brooklyn Partnership announces 2017 events calendar

“Downtown Brooklyn Presents” Features Free Concerts, Outdoor Movie Screenings, BK Block Parties, Outdoor Games and Exercise Classes All Season Long

The Downtown Brooklyn Partnership (DBP) today announced the lineup for its 2017 events series, “Downtown Brooklyn Presents,” which brings residents and local workers out into the public plazas of one of the nation’s fastest growing downtowns. The calendar of events includes free outdoor movie screenings, concerts, festivals, fitness classes, dance parties, and ping pong tournaments. The series continues all the way through the season to the annual Halloween party.

As part of the series, DBP is partnering with Forest City Ratner Companies to bring a a fresh slate of free events and activities to the Summer@MetroTech programming for the thousands who call Downtown Brooklyn their workplace or home. The legendary BAM R&B Festival will be returning to the MetroTech Commons for its 23rd season of lunchtime concerts.

Also for the first time, in partnership with Mark Morris Dance Group (MMDG), Downtown Brooklyn Presents is bringing the fun to the Atlantic Terminal Plaza on June Saturdays with Hip-Hop, Afro-Haitian, and Salsa dance performances followed by drop- in classes with MMDG faculty.

Partners for this season’s events also include Brooklyn Academy of Music, Paper Garden Records, Rooftop Films, the Brooklyn Book Festival, La Défense Bakery and Bistro, Con Edison and Macy’s.

We’re back with our monthly BK Block Parties starting on April 22nd! Kick off the day with a family friendly concert, giveaways, balloon animals and face painting for the kids. Then get some shopping done at Fulton Street Mall with our exclusive deals of the day.

May 20 – Jah Pan – Steel drum and calypso musicians from Trinidad and Tobago play island classics and Caribbean-influenced interpretations of today’s hit songs

June 17 – Shira & Friends – an interactive extravaganza combining original tunes with classics for a sing-along, dance-along good time

July 15 – Rolie Polie Guacamole – parent-friendly music that dresses up original tunes and classic covers

Aug 19 – Burdetsky Family Circus – an amazing family circus featuring contortionists and dancing dog acts

Sept 16 – Astrograss – gets kids and parents dancing and singing together with their unique blend of bluegrass, old-time, and folk music

Oct 28 – Halloween Party featuring a dance party and kids costume fashion show

June 10 – Salsa performance by Dance Center faculty members Andre Degas and Cynthia Dowden followed by a drop-in Salsa class

June 17 – Afro-Haitian performance featuring Dance Center faculty and drummers followed by an Afro-Haitian class with live drumming led by Dance Center faculty

June 24 – It’s Showtime NYC! A Hip-Hop performance followed by a Hip-Hop dance jam led by artists from the performance group

 

Happy Hours @ MetroTech

Summer Thursday evenings in Downtown Brooklyn are about to get happy! Happy Hours @ MetroTech will feature friendly ping pong tournaments in June, Double Dutch classes in July, and corn hole competitions in August. DJs will set the soundtrack for the evenings. Get a glass of wine or a beer outdoors at La Defense and Luciano’s and enjoy the summer evenings in MetroTech.

 

Yoga Tuesdays

Ease into the week with morning yoga in the Commons. Provided by Mark Morris Dance Group, the 1-hour sessions take place on the northwest end of the Commons in the grassy area. Participants bring their own mats.

 

Bootcamp Wednesdays

Wednesdays, June – August. 7:00-8:00am
MetroTech Commons
Get pumped up for the day with a bootcamp work out. These 1-hour classes will focus on building strength, endurance,and stability. Classes will take place in front of 5 MetroTech. All necessary exercise equipment supplied.
