ON THIS DAY IN 1947, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “Boro Rabbi Returning to Aid Jews in Berlin.”

The article focused on a local rabbi who was returning to his native Berlin to become the first rabbi of Berlin since before WWII.

“Upon his return to Berlin, Dr. Munk will live in the American zone of the German capital and will be the spiritual leader of orthodox, conservative and reformed Jewish survivors of the Nazi terror,” the Eagle reported.

NELLIE BLY WAS BORN ON THIS DAY IN 1864. “Nellie Bly” was the pseudonym used by pioneering American journalist Elizabeth Cochrane Seaman. Like her namesake in a Stephen Foster song, Nellie Bly was a social reformer and human rights advocate. As a journalist, she is best known for her exposé of conditions in what were then popularly called “insane asylums,” where she posed as an “inmate.” As an adventurer, she is best known for her 1889–’90 around-the-world tour in 72 days, in which she bettered the time of Jules Verne’s fictional character Phileas Fogg by eight days. She died in 1922 in New York.

TYRONE POWER WAS BORN ON THIS DAY IN 1914. The American actor was one of the most popular romantic leads in Hollywood during the 1930s and ’40s. He is best known for his roles in “Suez,” “The Mark of Zorro,” “Blood and Sand,” “The Razor’s Edge” and “Nightmare Alley.” Power died in 1958 in Spain during a film shoot.

KARL MARX WAS BORN ON THIS DAY IN 1818. The German socialist was the founder and father of modern communism and author of “Das Kapital” and (with Friedrich Engels) the “Communist Manifesto.” Marx died in England in 1883.

THE AMERICAN MEDICAL ASSOCIATION WAS FOUNDED ON THIS DAY IN 1847. It was organized at a meeting in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and was attended by 250 delegates. It marked the first national medical convention in the U.S.

JAMES BEARD WAS BORN ON THIS DAY IN 1903. The “father of American cooking” had a long and busy culinary career. He penned more than 20 classic cookbooks, appeared on TV’s first cooking show in 1946 and was an enthusiastic ambassador for American regional cooking. He died in 1985. His Greenwich Village brownstone is America’s only culinary historic landmark and serves as the headquarters of the James Beard Foundation.
