THE LEDE: Hello again, Brooklyn! We missed you, too! After our brief hiatus, we bring you updates on the flurry of political activity in the Puerto Rican and Haitian communities in Brooklyn and NYC, and our borough is seeing a boom in an unexpected demographic (no, we’re not talking about millennials). TheMTA offers some advice for alternative commutes during the L-pocalypse, and the villain that everyone loves to hate returns to a park in Carroll Gardens. Finally, Congresswoman Yvette Clarke wants to know why New Orleans is dismantling its Confederate monuments, but some still remain inBay Ridge. ~A ‘DOG-AND-PONY-SHOW’ AND A ‘HALF-MEASURE’: Thousands of Brooklyn residents hail from Haiti and Puerto Rico, and Brooklyn pols arepiping up about the heated political events surrounding the two places. U.S. Rep. Nydia Velázquez offered harsh words on Sunday’s referendum on statehood in Puerto Rico. She said that, at a time when education is hobbled and half of Puerto Rican children live in poverty, “spending funds on a misguided, ‘dog-and-pony-show’ plebiscite is unacceptable.” Meanwhile, on the same day as the referendum, a coalition called for an 18-month extension of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haiti. Some of the largest pockets of Haitian immigrants in the country are concentrated in Brooklyn, and at least one attorney predicts that about 20,000 Haitians in the NYC area will be needing assistance very soon. Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adamscalled the six-month TPS extension “a half-measure at best.” (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)    
 
~MEANWHILE, IN SUNSET PARK…: While politics swirled around the Manhattan Puerto Rican Day Parade (with mayoral candidate Nicole Malliotakis among the boycotters), the third annual Sunset Park Puerto Rican Day Parade thought it had escaped the controversy last weekend….but parade organizers slapped Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams with a lifetime ban from the parade after he skipped a town hall meeting that they requested he attend before marching. (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle and Brooklyn Paper)    
 
~WELCOME TO THE “AGING APPLE”: Of all the city’s senior citizens, nearly 50 percent are immigrants. A report from the Center for an Urban Future(CUF) maps NYC’s rising population of immigrant seniors, and finds that Brooklyn experienced the most dramatic change regarding this population over the past five years–the borough saw an increase in 30 percent, with East Flatbush seeing the greatest increase within the borough. How do we care for an aging population whose median income is $10,800? Technical.ly predicts that we’ll see a startup culture focused on the aging. (via Technical.ly) 
 
~REVIEW: EVERYBODY’S FAVORITE VILLAIN RETURNS TO BROOKLYN:The hunchback with a dark heart, Richard III, returns in all his conniving glory to a park in Carroll Gardens for Smith Street Stage’s tradition of free outdoor Shakespeare (with modern dress). ~GENERAL LEE FALLS IN NEW ORLEANS, BUT STANDS TALL IN BROOKLYN: When New Orleans dismantled (to great uproar) its Confederate statues, Congresswoman and born-and-bred Brooklynite Yvette Clarke was quick to point out Brooklyn’s unfaced history. She took to Twitter to write “We should do likewise with General Lee Avenue in Brooklyn.” Bay Ridge is home to not just a street named for the Confederate Army general, but several other Confederate monuments, such as a maple tree planted by Lee and inscribed by the United Daughters of the Confederacy. Says Clarke: “If you have a commitment in the Deep South to turn the page, why would we in Brooklyn commemorate Confederate Army generals?” (via the New Yorker)
