THE LEDE: Good morning! One group angles to plant Brooklyn and NYC’s next big park in a rather unexpected location. One month after the passage of theFreelance Isn’t Free Act, three full-time freelancers offer their tips, and theNYC Ferry links traditional and trendy Brooklyn neighborhoods. Then, we check in on a 100-year-old business that has no desire to become trendy. Why is lacrosse suddenly growing in popularity in Brooklyn? We explain. Finally, New Yorkers respond to anti-Islam rallies by breaking fast in solidarity in Downtown Brooklyn. Plus, check out photos from Brooklyn’s Pride Parade, and head to a “surreal trailer park” in Red Hook. We’ll see you again on Friday!

IMPRINT: The muggy weather had us California dreamin’ this week, and Holiday mag was on the same page.

~WHERE’S THE BEST SITE FOR NYC’S NEXT BIG PARK?: Try the banks of the Gowanus Canal (yes, really). Next week, the Gowanus Canal Conservancy will unveil a plan that imagines a web of parks and green spaces around the notoriously polluted canal. The plan comes at a crucial moment for the neighborhood–the site is in the midst of an EPA Superfund cleanup, Gowanus is on the brink of rezoning and major firms are scooping up properties in the area. Bonus Question: How do you feel about eating blue crabs caught in the canal? The NY State of Health Dept. says it might actually be okay, in certain situations. (via DNAinfo and Pardon Me for Asking)

~HOW TO FREELANCE, ACCORDING TO FREELANCERS: We’re one month deep into the passage of the Freelance Isn’t Free Act, which grants freelancers the same protections (i.e. written contracts, timely payments and protection from retaliation) as full-fledged employees. About 38 percent of New Yorkers do some sort of freelance work…and that percentage is only expected to grow. Three Brooklyn-based freelancers – a photographer, a management consultant and an artist – share their tips on turning a side hustle into a full-time hustle, and how to continue to stick up for your rights. (via The Bridge)

~HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO GO FROM TRADITIONAL TO TRENDY?: Approximately 19 minutes. That’s how long it takes Bay Ridge residents to get to Red Hook cultural center Pioneer Works on the NYC Ferry. Alternately, it takes about 42 minutes to travel from Bay Ridge to Pier 1 at Brooklyn Bridge Park, where riders meet Anish Kapoor’s latest mega-installation. NYC Ferry’s Bay Ridge service, which launched on June 1, is a game changer for Bay Ridge residents who would likely describe their neighborhood as “traditional” rather than “trendy.” Now, the two worlds are a $2.75 ferry ride apart, no Uber or sluggish R trains involved. (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)

~SOME STICK WITH THE TRADITIONAL: Believe it or not, there’s one place in Brooklyn that hasn’t changed much in 100 years: Staubitz Market onCourt Street in Boerum HillJohn McFadden Jr., one of the meat shop’s owners, says with a shrug that “The art of butchery is pretty limited.” ButStaubitz has perfected that art over the past century—sans fancy sandwiches, fair-trade coffee and craft beer, which have become ubiquitous at trendy butcher shops. With that formula, McFadden remains optimistic that the shop will keep its doors open for another 100 years. (via the NYT)

~LACROSSE ISN’T JUST FOR LONG ISLAND: Lacrosse — a stereotypical tony sport reserved for the affluent suburbs of Long Island, N.J. and Maryland — is growing rapidly and increasing in popularity in Brooklyn and beyond thanks to the Brooklyn Lacrosse Club“What we tried to do was create an organization that looks like Brooklyn; that draws in people from all walks in life in an inclusive way,” said Brooklyn Lacrosse Club Director Joseph Nocella.(via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)

~ICYMI//IN THE WAKE OF ANTI-MUSLIM RALLIES, NEW YORKERS JOIN TO BREAK RAMADAN FAST: Last weekend, several hundred New Yorkers – Muslims and people of other faiths – gathered at Cadman Plaza inDowntown Brooklyn to break the fast that Muslims observe during Ramadan. The gathering was a way to show solidarity in the wake of several local anti-Islam rallies and protests. Says Peter Gudaitis, executive director ofNY Disaster Interfaith Services“The fact of the matter is, Islam has been in the United States since it [NY] was a Dutch colony…I don’t think we should indulge ourselves into thinking Islam is somehow incompatible with American society and culture.” (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)
