THE LEDE: Hello and happy Friday, Brooklyn! After simmering for a week, the mayor’s office introduces a very green plan to beat the heat. In bleaker news, the numbers show that drug overdoses in NYC climbed to record highs in 2016. Take a walk down memory lane and relive your most hellish commutes of 2017 with a new visual representation of the subway’s grinding decline. Some good news: both the Brooklyn Heights Library and the Brooklyn Bridge Park Pop-Up Pool live on (albeit with caveats). AGowanus resident will represent the borough on Jeopardy! on Monday, and finally, controversial nightclub The Brooklyn Mirage will open its doors once again, with a blockbuster lineup to boot. Have a great weekend and a happyFather’s Day!

~MORE TREES, PLEASE: An average of 450 New Yorkers land in emergency departments each year due to extreme heat, and after three sweltering days this week, the city announced that it will drop $106 million on green rooftops and tree planting. About 80 percent of the $106M investment will be funneled into Central Brooklyn, South Bronx and Northern Manhattan, and the benefits of tree planting extend far beyond heat reduction…for example, large pit trees can reduce flooding during heavy rains, which in turn lessens the likelihood of sewage seeping into rivers. (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle and Gothamist)

~OPIOID CRISIS CONTINUES TO GRIP NYC: The Department of Healthhas revealed some unsettling stats: overdose deaths increased 46 percent across the city last year, and increased in all demographic groups and in nearly all neighborhoods. Heroin was to blame for 55 percent of those cases. That means drug overdoses reached a record high in 2016(via DNAinfo)

~“A VISUAL TIMELINE OF THE SUBWAY’S EPIC 2017 MELTDOWN”:2017 has been a helluva year for the subways. While the trains hobble and lurch through the tunnels, the wifi has remained on platforms…allowing disgruntled passengers to meticulously document the subway’s slow, sad, staggering demise. Curbed NY presents a visual timeline of the events, so you can relive six months of hellish commuting all over again. (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle and Curbed NY)

~WHO IS JEREMY FASSLER?: He’s a Gowanus resident and writer for The Daily Banter who will appear on Jeopardy!. Fassler says he prepped for the competition for about a month, with lots of help from his girlfriend. The show is pre-recorded, so he already knows how his efforts paid off, but Fassler must keep mum until the show airs on WABC-TV on Monday(via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)

~BROOKLYN HEIGHTS LIBRARY LIVES ON: The Cadman Plaza building may be a pile of rubble, but the reading must go on at the library’stemporary location on Remsen St., which is attracting new patrons as well as loyal followers. (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)

~BROOKLYN BRIDGE PARK POP-UP POOL LIVES ON, TOO (FOR NOW):The Pop-Up Pool at Brooklyn Bridge Park will be back this summerstarting on June 29, but only for one more year. The agency overseeing the park granted only a one-year extension, but locals are already circulating apetition to ensure the pool’s return after this summer. (via DNAinfo)

~OPINION//BUT WHAT ABOUT CONEY ISLAND?: The NYC Ferry is here, and wildly popular. The service has been lauded for connecting far-flung areas like Bay Ridge with Downtown Brooklyn, but one area feels shunted. For at least 10 years, the idea of a ferry stop in Coney Island has been avidly discussed by politicians, community groups and others. It’s not a new idea, either–from the 19th century until the 1930s, the Iron Steamboat Companyran paddleboat ferries from various Manhattan locations to Steeplechase PierWhy not bring it back? (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)

~WELCOME TO THE WEEKEND, BROOKLYN: The infamous East Williamsburg club The Brooklyn Mirage will host its opening party onJuly 1. Artists on the bill for the outdoor venue’s holiday weekend bash include Berlin-based duo Tale of UsStephan Bodzin and Recondite. The Brooklyn Mirage is run out of an industrial lot at 140 Stewart Ave. and is operated by Zurich-based entertainment company Cityfox. Don’t think the buck stops at the July 1 party–Cityfox announced an additional four parties over the course of the summer. (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)
