THE LEDE: Good morning and happy Tuesday! In today’s briefing, Sen. Chuck Schumer calls for help in getting a grip on New York’s steady uptick in drug overdose cases, and a very different building will rise in the place of the oldBrooklyn Heights Library. At (very) long last, Sunset Park is getting a new elementary school, and the death of two cyclists in one week reignites conversations about the best ways to share the roads. Finally, Clinton Hillresidents and a tour bus company come to a very democratic solution on how to share the neighborhood streets, and the MTA drops some stats to confirm what we’ve been suspecting in 2017.

~APPROX. FOUR NEW YORKERS DIED OF A DRUG OVERDOSE EVERY DAY LAST YEAR: Sen. Chuck Schumer is putting his foot down. He’s pushing for the federal government to dispatch a specialized drug enforcement team to NY state, citing a steady uptick in heroin busts and overdoses and heavy local drug enforcement costs. In a letter to Acting DEA AdministratorChuck Rosenberg, Schumer cited two recent cases in Brooklyn. In one, a ringleader circulated 2 million glassines of heroin, and in the other, cops busted a ring with a $22 million stash. (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle) 
 
~WHERE THE BK HEIGHTS LIBRARY ONCE STOOD, A 36-STORY TOWER WILL RISE: The Brooklyn Heights Library is officially a pile of rubble, but not for long. Hudson Companies has closed on the $52 million acquisition of the property, and also on a $280 million first mortgage loan. The planned 36-story project at 280 Cadman Plaza West will include a new library, 134 market-rate condo units and a 9,000-square-foot STEM lab operated by the Dept. of Education. (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle) 
 
~ARE YOU A SUNSET PARK PARENT? YOU’LL SOON HAVE MORE SCHOOL OPTIONS: A new elementary school is coming to Sunset Park…for the first time in over a decade. The school will be City Councilmember Carlos Menchaca’s fourth new school development project inDistrict 38 in the past four years. The school location is set to be purchased at the corner of the 36th Street and Fifth Avenue, and Menchaca claims the new school will help alleviate overcrowding. “I’m proud to fight for our students and teachers,” he said. “Providing the right environment is critical to giving our kids the best education available and in assisting our teachers.” (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle) 
 
~IN THE WAKE OF ACCIDENTS, REVAMPED TALKS ON CYCLING SAFETY: Last week, two cyclists  – including Brooklyn Heights residents Dan Hanegby – were killed by charter buses while riding in Chelsea. The accidents have renewed conversations on how to make city streets safer for cyclists…and it’s clear that it will have to be a group effort. Meanwhile, inClinton Hill, the city will install a bike lane on Classon Ave. this summer. Family members of a Crown Heights resident who was killed on the avenue have been pushing for the city to install the bike lane since her death last year.(via WNYC and DNAinfo) 
 
~THE WHEELS ON THE BUS GO ROUND AND ROUND, ALL THROUGH BROOKLYN: Alongside Brooklyn’s rise as a “hip” place to live has come a rise in the number of tourists…and tour buses. Cobble Hill residents dealt with the congestion first hand as buses from the aptly named Big Bus Tours began taking a shortcut along Henry Street – a thoroughfare where they don’t belong – to get to Red Hook. The Cobble Hill Association turned to Sen.Daniel Squadron, who in turn worked with Big Bus Tours to create a “geo-fence” using the buses’ GPS system. Now, when the bus rolls into an area it shouldn’t, the system will alert the company’s management. CHA President Amy Breedlove applauded the effort: “This is how it works when everyone plays their role. The community organization spotted this quality-of-life problem, the elected official asked the responsible party to stop and the company immediately took responsibility and stopped.” (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle) 
 
~NO, YOU WEREN’T IMAGINING IT: The MTA has statistically justified your subway gripes. New data reveals that, from January to March 2017, a whopping 75 percent of subway lines were chronically late. Which lines were tardy most frequently? The 2, 4 and 5, which ran on schedule less than 35 percent of the time on weekdays. But hey, at least the MTA will do away with pre-recorded announcements regarding delays. Soon, a real person will inform us of signal problems instead of a robot. (via Curbed NY and DNAinfo)
