THE LEDE: Good morning! Which canal would you prefer: the Gowanus, or those of Venice, Italy? One local group has a plan to make that choice a little less obvious. New mothers in Brooklyn face a growing health problem, and new safety worries emerge as the city’s population ages. Meanwhile,Sunset Park moves into the spotlight, and now that it’s officially summer, it’s time to head to the park to soak up some of the city’s outdoor art. A rouge bus careens through Bushwick, and if you haven’t seen the video, it’s about time you watch. Finally, the Parks Department debuts a new map to help you better appreciate your street trees. We’ll see you again on Friday!

~WILL THE GOWANUS CANAL BECOME THE VENICE OF BROOKLYN?:The Gowanus Canal is notorious for its toxic waters, pungent fumes and glistening coal tar, but it soon may be known for a state-of-the-art park coming to its shores. Advertised as the Venice of Brooklyn and the next river Seine, the Gowanus Canal Conservancy has big plans for the 1.8-mile polluted canal, referred to by some as the dirtiest waterway in America. GCC released the “master plan” for the park — dubbed “Gowanus Lowlands: A Blueprint for NYC’s Next Great Park” — on Tuesday at the group’s 10th anniversary party. (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)

~THE UNEXPECTED ISSUE BROOKLYN MOMS ARE FACING: From 2008 to 2012, severe maternal morbidity – meaning lasting consequences to a woman’s health after giving birth – shot up 28 percent…and Central Brooklyn is the epicenter of the issue. Race, poverty, age, access to healthcare and even whether or not the mother wanted to have a baby all have an effect on the level of risk. Local experts are eager to nip the fight against maternal morbidity in the bud as part of a dual-battle against maternal mortality, as the U.S. has one of the worst rates of maternal mortality in the developed world. (via City Limits)

~WHAT HAPPENS WHEN NEW YORK GROWS GRAY?: If you think millennials are the fastest-growing demographic in NYC, think again. City Comptroller Scott Stringer released a report indicating that people aged 65+ are by far the city’s fastest-growing group…and NYC will likely be home to 1.4 million seniors by 2040, as baby boomers ease into old age. How does the country’s largest city ensure that seniors with dementia and Alzheimer’s stay safe? The NYPD and support groups are developing a system for tracking down seniors when they don’t make it home safely. The system is called Silver Alert, and there have been 45 of them so far in 2017. Of those missing seniors, 25 were last seen in Brooklyn. (via WNYC)

~SUNSET PARK MOVES INTO THE SPOTLIGHT: We’ve been big fans ofSunset Park for a long while now (and here’s why our readers love the neighborhood, too). Now, WNYC zeroes in on Sunset Park as part of itsAffordability Project series, and takes a look at how and why the neighborhood is changing. Hint: Industry City, major waterfront investments, improving transportation connections and decently-priced rents (by comparison, at least). (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle and WNYC)

~’TIS THE SEASON…FOR WANDERING AROUND OUTDOOR SCULPTURE PARKS: Check out the large-scale sculptures at Pratt Sculpture Park (orcome with us on a virtual tour), and head to Bed-Stuy’s Herbert von King Park to sit in a new interactive sculpture with seating designed to encourage people to sit back and chat. (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle and DNAinfo)

~ICYMI//VIDEO OF THE DAY: An unmanned city bus careened backwards down a Bushwick street late Tuesday night after the driver left it in neutral while popping into a bodega. No one was killed, but one person and several parked cars were hurt. Here’s the deeply surreal video of the incident. (via DNAinfo)

~MAP OF THE DAY: Paging all tree lovers, huggers and appreciators: theParks Department has dropped a map of every single tree on every single block of NYC. Brooklyn alone boasts 177,000+ trees. (via Technical.ly)
