THE LEDE: Welcome to the week, Brooklyn! This morning, we begin with a piece of advice to consider as you lock in your 4th of July plans. Last week, we learned that Mayor de Blasio may not control the school system for much longer…now, we explain what exactly that could mean. A recent surge in bike accidents prompts a police crackdown (but not on drivers), and one Brooklyn photographer zooms in on Fulton Mall. Finally, the king of coasters returns toConey Island for the Cyclone’s 90th birthday. Keep reading for a piece on the unexpected history of square dancing and a recommendation for a road trip that barely leaves the city. Have a great week!

IMPRINT: All frowns on the cover of Financial Mail.

*Correction: A pesky, silent ‘h’ was wandering around in our subject line last week. The returned Chairman of the MTA is, of course, Joe Lhota, not Joe Lohta. We regret the error.

~TIME TO FIND A NEW SPOT FOR YOUR FIREWORKS FIX: With sweeping views of the Statue of Liberty and the Brooklyn Bridge, the Brooklyn Heights Promenade is notorious for being one of the most sought-out locations to view the Macy’s 4th of July fireworks show. But not this year. The nation’s largest pyrotechnic display will once again return to the East River this year, but, much to the disdain of Brooklynites, it will only be viewable fromWilliamsburg and Greenpoint(via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)

~IS NYC READY FOR 32 SCHOOL BOARDS?: Mayor de Blasio may not oversee the NYC school system for much longer. The state Legislature last week failed to approve the extension of mayoral control of the system by the end of its formal session…which means that the city could return to the old Board of Education system, with 32 different community school boards. (TheBloomberg administration overhauled that system more than a decade ago). Senate Republicans insist on linking the extension to an expansion of the number of charter schools that can open in the city. Officials have until June 30to return to Albany to undo the expiration of mayoral control. (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)

~YOU MAY WANT TO THINK TWICE ABOUT RUNNING THAT RED LIGHT:Police are cracking down on rule-breaking cyclists. In Bushwick, ticketing of cyclists shot up 160 percent over a 28-day period. The push comes on the heels of a spike in bike accidents—13 accidents during a period when there are usually only three, according to police. In nine of those 13 cases, police say, cyclists were at fault for eschewing traffic signals. (via DNAinfo)

~STILL MORE CONSEQUENCES OF L-POCALYPSE: We’ve checked in on how the impending 15-month shutdown of the L will affect the real estate market, and we’re certainly aware of how it will affect commuters. But, how about Brooklyn’s industrial zones? The borough’s pockets of factories and warehouses provide a source for the city’s goods and services, as well as plenty of small manufacturing operations. These zones rely heavily on free-flowing movement…which may be constricted when spillover from the shutdown results in an increase in people moving – whether it be in cabs, buses or Lyfts – above ground. (via Vice)

~“IT’S HELD ITS OWN FOR NOW”: That’s what photographer Joel Barhamand says about the thriving street life around Fulton Mall inDowntown Brooklyn. He began photographing the street in 2013 when he moved to the neighborhood from the East Village. After seeing the shuttering of local clothing stores and luncheonettes, he told the NYT: “This is not going to be here in five years. I should make it a point to be here as often as I can.”So, he did, and he took thousands of photos of the street and its characters along the way…meanwhile, foodies from Brooklyn and beyond are flocking to the nearby, newly-opened DeKalb Market Hall(via the NYT and the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)

~“COASTER KING OF CONEY ISLAND” RETURNS: Happy 90th birthday to the Coney Island Cyclone! Forty summers ago, a teenager named Richard Rodriguez strapped himself into Seat 6 on the roller coaster, and didn’t get out until almost 104 hours later, after the coaster had made nearly 2,400 trips. The ride sparked a career of endurance-riding on roller coasters for Rodriguez, and he returned to Brooklyn last week for anniversary festivities. Rodriguez says the spin remains one of the brightest highlights of his Brooklyn youth…and hints that he may come back for more one day. (via the NYT)
