The Rev. William G. Smith will preside at a memorial Mass at noon Wednesday, June 28 at St. Charles Borromeo Roman Catholic Church in Brooklyn Heights, in memory of the late Msgr. Charles Diviney. Diviney, who led St. Charles as pastor from 1959 to 1978, is a predecessor and mentor to Smith, who becomes the new pastor of St. Charles this week.

The parish introduced Smith as pastor in its weekly bulletin on June 25.

Following his ordination to the priesthood in March 1979, Smith served parishes around the Roman Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn and Queens. When appointed as a parochial vicar (associate priest) at St. Saviour Church in Park Slope, Smith met Diviney, who by then had retired as pastor of St. Charles Church. Diviney became a friend and mentor to Smith.

The first Mass that Smith will celebrate as pastor of St. Charles will be the memorial liturgy for Diviney.
