~WHERE DO OUR APPLE CORES GO?:  The largest single component of the city’s annual 14 million tons of trash is organic materials, and that results in a $400 million annual price tag to ship those materials to incinerators and landfills. ~FASTER, CHEAPER, BETTER FIX PROPOSED FOR BQE: City officials, industry experts and community leaders last week called on Albany to allow the city to use the design-build bidding process to expedite the roadway’s long-overdue $1.9 billion rehabilitation. DoT officials say using the design-build model, which merges design and construction bids in order to save time and money, would trim the duration of the BQE rehab from ~7 years to 5. While being used successfully in projects around New York, the state Legislature has been reluctant to extend design-build authority to city agencies, said DoT Commissioner Polly Trottenberg. (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle) 
 
~WHO GETS THE NOD FROM THE NYC GOP?: The Brooklyn Republican Party and former MTA Chair/CEO Joe Lohta have joined the Staten Island GOP inendorsing Nicole Malliotakis for mayor. “Her immigrant background, her Greek and Cuban heritage, her experience as an elected official and her reputation as a tireless campaigner will make her a candidate to be reckoned with,” said Executive Committee Chairman Ted Ghorra. In addition, State Sen. Marty Golden has officially endorsed his Deputy Chief of Staff John Quaglione for City Council. Quaglione focuses on tackling issues that affect his Bay Ridge community, such as proposing plans for adding more police officers and gaining community approval for bike lanes. (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle) 
 
~STATISTIC OF THE DAY: In the 2016-2017 season, 80.5 percent of artists represented at the top 45 New York galleries were white, and 70 percent were male. That’s according to findings by CUNY Guttman College students who crunched the numbers of artist representation at NYC’s top commercial galleries. Professor James Case-Leal insists that the results need not “be read as accusatory,” but merely an “honest assessment.” (via Hyperallergic)
