~IN THE RACE FOR BROOKLYN DA, SEVEN’S COMPANY: The candidates for Brooklyn district attorney came together in a forum for the first time this week…and that’s no small feat. The seven (yes, seven) candidates each delivered an opening and closing statement, and spent the bulk of the two hours answering audience questions, which mostly focused on reforms of the criminal justice system. Read up on (all seven of) the candidates. (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle) 
 
~SCENES FROM A LADIES-ONLY SCREENING OF ‘WONDER WOMAN’ IN BROOKLYN: Last weekend, women from across Brooklyn and NYC flocked to the Alamo Drafthouse in order to find “sisterhood” and watch Gal Gadot on the silver screen without overhearing commentary about her bosoms, among other reasons. But the women-only screening of the summer blockbuster ignited internet fury among some men, who wondered if the next step would be male-only screenings of “Thor.” But many women at the screening shrugged off the cries of discrimination–as did Alamo Drafthouse, which promptly scheduled a second ladies-only screening. (via the NYT) 
 
~MEET MISS BROOKLYN: Ever wondered about those two statues of ladies on Flatbush Ave. near the Manhattan Bridge? Their names are Miss Brooklyn and Miss Manhattan, and they were created by artist Brian Tolle…but the sculptures are replicas of two 12-foot granite figures created byDaniel Chester French (whose name you may recognize for another small monument he created–the Lincoln Memorial). The original granite dames were installed in 1916 in order to guard the Brooklyn gateway to the Manhattan Bridge, and were later removed by Robert Moses. In a nod to Brooklyn’s Dutch roots, Miss Brooklyn holds a tablet that reads “Ein Drach Mackt Maght”–”In Union, there is strength.” (via BKLYNER)     
 
~OUR LADY OF LORETO IN JEOPARDY (AGAIN): A judge has decided toend a temporary ban on the demolition of Our Lady of Loreto. Members of the Brownsville Cultural Coalition had been campaigning to have the church building at 126 Sackman St. declared a city landmark and turned into a neighborhood cultural center, but Catholic officials plan to build low-income housing on the Ocean Hill-Brownsville church site. (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle) 
 
~NO SUCH THING AS FREE RENT (FOREVER): With the glut of high-end rentals in Brooklyn, landlords have taken to doling out freebies – sometimes including a month of free rent – in order to keep vacancies low. The adjustments have allowed developers to net a wider group of renters, but what happens when those concessions are so common that they become the norm, and they attract renters who are dependent on them? And then, what happens when they run out? Experts warn against the unsustainability of the practice…Meanwhile, Greenpoint debuts two more fancy condo buildings, with matching fancy price tags. (via Curbed NY)
 
~CITY CRACKS DOWN ON ILLEGAL HOME CONVERSIONS: Suspect that a private home on your street is being illegally converted into a multiunit house?The city may step in. Mayor de Blasio has signed into law a bill designed to crack down on sneaky landlords who subdivide single-family or two-family homes into multiple units. City Councilmember Vincent Gentile called illegal home conversions a public safety issue, like when the city discovered 31 people living in a two-family Dyker Heights home last August. Now, the new bill could slap landlords with a $15,000 penalty for each illegally carved-out unit.(via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)
