ON THIS DAY IN 1953, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article on the front page titled “80 Die in Bay State Tornadoes.”

The article focused on a series of Massachusetts tornadoes that claimed both homes and lives.

“Hardest hit by the New England tornadoes was Worcester County, a textile and manufacturing center, where estimates of injured ran up to 700. Thousands of homes were wrecked and property loss was estimated in the millions of dollars,” the Eagle reported.

JUDY GARLAND WAS BORN ON THIS DAY IN 1922.While the American actress and singer played in many films and toured widely as a singer, she is probably most remembered for her portrayal of Dorothy Gale in the now-classic “The Wizard of Oz.” Garland died in 1969 in England.

MAURICE SENDAK WAS BORN ON THIS DAY IN 1928. The Brooklyn-born author and illustrator wrote and illustrated many notable children’s books, including “In the Night Kitchen,” “Kenny’s Window” and, his most famous work, “Where the Wild Things Are.” Widely regarded as the first picture book artist to deal openly with children’s emotions, Sendak received numerous awards for his work, notably the Caldecott Medal, the Hans Christian Andersen Award and the Laura Ingalls Wilder Medal. He died in 2012 in Connecticut.

ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS WAS FOUNDED ON THIS DAY IN 1935. Dr. Robert Smith of Akron, Ohio completed his first day of permanent sobriety. “Doctor Bob” and William G. Wilson are considered to have founded Alcoholics Anonymous on that day.

HATTIE McDANIEL WAS BORN ON THIS DAY IN 1895. She was the first African American to win an Academy Award, winning it in 1940 for her role in the 1939 film “Gone with the Wind.” Her career spanned radio and vaudeville in addition to her screen roles in “Judge Priest,” “The Little Colonel,” “Showboat” and “Saratoga,” among others. McDaniel died in California in 1952.

TODAY IS NATIONAL MARINA DAY. It is a nationwide boating event dedicated to grow boating participation across North America. Marine businesses collaborate to hold events to introduce the public to boating through on-water and landside activities at marinas in every corner of the country.
