THE LEDE: Good Monday morning, Brooklyn! In today’s briefing, read about how Brooklyn will soon be the home of the nation’s first VR/AR lab, and  a long-running concert series won’t go on. Then, Russians living in Brighton Beach are wary of Trump’s meeting with Putin, and a hair salon in Bed-Stuybears witness to the changing neighborhood. Finally, take time for a piece on Brooklyn’s underground world of illegal pets, and visit Staff Picks for a piece on all the babies named after a basketball star over the years.

~WELCOME TO THE FUTURE: Brooklyn will soon be the home to the country’s first ever publicly funded virtual reality/augmented reality (VR/AR) facility,  further solidifying the borough’s role as a tech powerhouse. VR and AR are hot and getting hotter, and the city says the new lab will directly create more than 500 jobs over the next 10 years. “Augmented and virtual reality represents a huge new industry, and we want New York City to be second to none,” Mayor de Blasio said in a release. (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)

~“THE SHOWS WON’T GO ON”: After thirty years, organizers have pulled the plug on long-running (and free!) Martin Luther King Jr. Concert Series inEast Flatbush and Seaside Summer Concert Series in Coney Island this year. It’s unclear whether the cancellation is tied to a lawsuit over $36,000 in credit card debt with American Express. (via DNAinfo and the NYDN)

~BRIGHTON BEACH RUSSIANS WARY OF TRUMP-PUTIN MEETING: The men sipping coffee in this Brighton Beach cafe have mixed emotions about the world leaders shaking hands on the television above the cash register. Like many here in the heart of New York City’s Russian community, they adore President Donald Trump. And at the same time, they are deeply skeptical of Russian President Vladimir Putin(via the AP and the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)

~SATURDAY NIGHT AT CHERRY’S: Cherry’s Unisex on Fulton St. has been a bedrock in Bed-Stuy for 27 years. The salon, frequented almost exclusively by black customers, often stays open late into the night, when barbers and customers mill about chatting and watching the neighborhood go by. And go by it has. Cherry’s bears witness to the changing neighborhood, and the customers who live in it. (via the NYT)

~BROOKLYN’S UNDERGROUND WORLD OF ILLEGAL PETS: Sure, Brooklyn is filled with proud dog-walkers and window cats that watch lonely commuters on their late-night walks home. But behind apartment doors and fenced in backyards across the borough, illegal pets make up a large network of Brooklyn’s animal residents. Between January 2014 and January 2015, the city’s 311 system collected 251 complaints in regards to residents keeping these outlawed pets, according to a report by DNAinfo. In that same time in Brooklyn, there were seven farm animal complaints, nine snake complaints, 27 rooster complaints and 20 miscellaneous. (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle and DNAinfo)
