THE LEDE: Good morning! The summer of hell has finally arrived in Brooklyn, with protests to accompany it. Then, some are predicting that Jersey City will be the next Brooklyn. They’re wrong, of course, but real estate markets across the river are beginning to mirror our borough’s. Next, some of the world’s fastest electric racecars will screech into Red Hook this weekend, and officials are already nervous about the 2020 census. Finally, head to Staff Picks for an interview with Toni Morrison and a big, booming job opportunity.

IMPRINT: Cool blues make for a very hot cover of Vogue Paris.

~WELCOME TO THE SUMMER OF HELL, BROOKLYN: Yesterday, L train riders, elected officials and transit advocates held a rally to push the NYCDept. of Transportation (DOT) and MTA to ensure riders that they’ll have a dedicated bus network to replace the L train during the impending 15-month shutdown. Advocates also called for the MTA to use the shutdown to make station improvements that will allow more L trains to run during peak hours after the shutdown ends. What else do advocates want? Specific commuting options for populations farther along the L-train line in neighborhoods likeBrownsville and East New York(via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)

~WILL JERSEY CITY BE THE NEXT BROOKLYN?: Doubtful. But brokers and analysts say that the condo comeback in Jersey City reflects a changing market in a revitalized city. Like in Brooklyn, demand for high-end condos is high, and so are the prices. Plus, Jersey City’s population has soared by about 10 percent since the 2000 census. Says appraiser Jeffrey Otteau“Jersey City has arrived as the seventh borough, behind the other five and Hoboken.” (via the WSJ)

~ZOOM, ZOOM, ZOOM THROUGH RED HOOK: Topping out at 150 mph, some of the world’s fastest electric racecars will be zipping and zooming aroundRed Hook this weekend for the city’s first-ever international car race. The vehicles, which can go from 0 to 60 mph in three seconds, will be racing around a brand new 1.2-mile racetrack inside the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal as part of the Formula E ePrix, the earth’s first fully electric single-seater racing series. “No city can do big events on a world stage quite like New York City, and Formula E will be a proof point of that,” says NYC & Company’s Senior Vice President Chris Heywood(via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)

~AN ACCURATE CENSUS? DON’T COUNT ON IT: The next U.S. census isn’t scheduled to take place until 2020, but Mayor Bill de Blasio and Democratic members of NYC’s congressional delegation are nervous that the local effort to count how many people are living here will fall short due to lack of funding. U.S. Rep. Yvette Clarke was among several House members who signed a letter to the U.S. Dept. of Commerce calling for more money, and the Mayor backs the effort. “You can’t plan to serve the people of this nation unless you know who they are and what their needs are,” he said. “It’s essential to good policy, regardless of one’s political affiliation or geography. Every person counts.” (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)

~AMID HEIGHTENED OPIOID CRISIS, PRESCRIPTIONS DOWN CITYWIDE: Fatal overdoses are on the rise across NYC, yet the city has seen a 12 percent decrease in the amount of painkiller prescriptions across the city in the three years since tracking began. That data is in line with aCDC study that found that the prescribing rate for opioids dipped nationally by 18 percent from 2010 to 2015…yet the U.S. still issued more than quadruple the amount of pills per capita than Europe in 2015. (via DNAinfo)
