THE LEDE: Happy Friday, Brooklyn! The man responsible for Red Hook’s headless torso was brought to justice. A 100-year-old mobster from Greenpoint, who killed 60 people, was released from jail. The circus is coming to town, and we don’t mean Ringling Bros. We find out that Bushwick is the neighborhood home to the most artists. And head on over to Staff Picks to read horror stories from the 1977 blackout that “turned Brooklyn into a battleground.”

IMPRINT: Donald Trump Jr. gets caught “red handed” on thelatest cover from Time.

The Rundown

~BOYFRIEND CHARGED IN RED HOOK’S HEADLESS TORSO CASE: The 40-year-old boyfriend of a deceased New Jersey woman was formally charged with murder and desecration of human remains on Wednesday in court in Bergen County, N.J. Jennifer Londono’s butchered and decomposed torso was found floating off the shoreline of Red Hook on June 27, and her leg and foot were found days later in the water off the Upper West Side. (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)

~BETTER LATE THAN NEVER, BOSS: A crime boss that hails fromGreenpoint was recently released from a federal prison in Massachusetts and now wheels (not walks) free. At 100 years old, John “Sonny” Franseze is now confined to a wheelchair, and wasthe oldest prisoner in federal custody until his release. Mob aficionados credit Franseze with bringing the lip-smacking kiss on the cheek into mafia family culture…But he certainly wasn’t primarily known for the affectionate part of his personality. Franseze is responsible for the deaths of 60 people, and he was caught on tape recommending several gruesome body disposal techniques. (via Greenpointers)

~AMID STATEWIDE DECREASE IN CHILD ABUSE, SLEW OF CASES RIPS THROUGH BROOKLYN: In the latest in a string of child abuse cases across the borough, a Brownsville man allegedly held his 9-month-old son in scalding bath water until his skin fell off.The father is headed to trial and plans to fight the charges, while his son will be permanently scarred. The case follows news of aman who beat his daughter to death in Coney Island, and a woman whose child recently passed away after she was leftunattended in a shelter. While these cases appear to form a grim pattern, the stats don’t necessarily show that. The Child Welfare League of America reports that between 2011 and 2015, the number of child victims statewide has decreased by more than 8 percent. (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle, ABC7 New York and the Daily News)

~A TALE OF TWO REAL ESTATE HUNTERS: Jessica Weaver, a sales rep with a $3,500 rent budget, recently locked in a rental near the Gowanus Canal. Along with the 16-month lease, she raked in two months of free rent, no extra charges for her pet and use of the space’s yoga and spin classes for $75 per year, as opposed to the usual $75 per month. Weaver’s story isn’t an uncommon one, as landlords offer slews of incentives to fill the current rental glut (in certain neighborhoods, at least. Rents in Greenpoint andDowntown Brooklyn are steadily climbing, while Williamsburghas fallen out of favor). Buying a home, however, is a different story. Homes in Brooklyn are pricier than ever, and the bidding wars rage on. (via Bloomberg, The Real Deal and Brownstoner)

~WHICH ’HOOD IS THE MOST ARTSY?: A new study calculates the exact number of artists in each and every ‘hood in NYC. In 2015, Brooklyn led all boroughs with a 72% increase in artists.Bushwick took the gold for the most artists, followed byWilliamsburg/Greenpoint and Park Slope/Carroll Gardens. Speaking of artists, we recently sat down with ‘Napoli, Brooklyn’ co-star Elise Kibler, who calls Williamsburg home. (Via Hyperallergic and the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)

MILESTONES

Happy birthday to actress Missy Gold, actor Jackie Earle Haley, scholar and author Maulana Karenga, UFC Featherweight Champion Conor McGregor, producer Joel Silver and sportscaster and former baseball player Steve Stone!

For Saturday, July 15: Dutch painter Rembrandt was born in 1606. British classical guitarist Julian Bream and German Chancellor Angela Merkel were born on the same date, as well as Greek native & queen of aggregationArianna Huffington.

And Sunday, July 16: Born on this day in 1945 was a new global monster, the realized power of the atomic bomb. In a New Mexico desert the test plutonium bomb vaporized its steel scaffolding and killed all plant and animal life for a mile. In a fraction of a second a fireball rose 8,000 feet, followed by  a mushroom cloud that rose 41,000 feet.
