ON THIS DAY IN 1937, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “Fewer Planes Hunt Earhart; Search May End Saturday.

The article focused on the reduction in the number of planes launched in search of Amelia Earhart and her navigator.

“Flyers of the aircraft carrier Lexington awaited passing of a tropical storm before resuming their ‘last chance’ search for the aviatrix and Frederick J. Noonan, who disappeared on a flight from New Guinea to Howland Island July 2,” the Eagle reported.

REMBRANDT WAS BORN ON THIS DAY IN 1606. The Dutch painter and etcher is one of the undisputed giants of Western art. He is best known for “The Night Watch” and many portraits and self-portraits. Rembrandt died in the Netherlands in 1669.

JOHN FOWLER WAS BORN ON THIS DAY IN 1817. He was an engineer renowned for his work on British bridges and railways. He constructed Victoria Station and the Grosvenor Bridge across the Thames River (the first railway bridge across that river) and was chief engineer of the 8,000-foot-long cantilever Forth Bridge over the Firth of Forth near Edinburgh, Scotland, which is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. He was the engineer of the London Metropolitan Railway — now known as the London Underground — which was the world’s first underground subway system. President of the Institute of Civil Engineers, Fowler died in 1898 in England.

CLEMENT CLARKE MOORE WAS BORN ON THIS DAY IN 1779. The American author and teacher is best remembered for his popular verse “A Visit from Saint Nicholas” (“‘Twas the Night Before Christmas”), which was first published anonymously and without Moore’s knowledge in a newspaper in 1823. Moore died in Rhode Island in 1863.
